Try a Scary Movie This Holiday Season

Jennifer Amlie
When people think of Christmas, they usually don't think of horror movies. There are plenty of horror offerings that have a Christmas theme or take place around the season. If you want to add some scare to your holiday this year, check out these ten Christmas horror movies.

1. Silent Night, Deadly Night
This slasher Christmas horror movie was released in 1984 to much controversy. Angry parents and others condemned the film because the killer is dressed in a Santa Claus suit. While it isn't a masterpiece, this film is fun to watch if you're in the mood for a slasher film with a Christmas twist.

2. Black Christmas(1974)
Another slasher movie, Black Christmas, focuses on sorority sisters who start to receive obscene, unnerving prank phone calls right before Christmas. This underrated gem maybe the first slasher horror movie ever made. It plays on suspense and you own imagination, as the killer is never properly seen.

3. Gremlins
While it isn't a typical rated R Christmas horror movie, Gremlins is a scary holiday film for older kids and parents. It tells the story of a young boy who gets a furry little creature for Christmas. Once the rules of caring for this creature are broken, mayhem breaks out. This is a great movie with a good mix of comedy and some scares.

4. Jack Frost (1996)
Not to be confused with the family friendly film of the same name, this Christmas horror movie is about a serial killer turned snowman. Low budget and bad in a good way, Jack Frost is great for cheap horror movie thrills.

5. P2
Taking place on Christmas Eve, a business woman is trapped in a parking garage with an insane guard. P2 is more about suspense then a straight out Christmas horror movie. It's still very good and creepy. If you have ever felt uneasy walking alone in a parking garage, you'll understand the thrills.

6. The Legend of Hell House
A group of psychics investigate a haunted house in the week before Christmas. Like any great haunted house film, it relies more on a chilling atmosphere then special effect thrills. It is a very scary, underrated movie that is perfect viewing for a Christmas horror fright.

7. Christmas Evil
Due to childhood trauma, a man becomes a toy maker obsessed with Christmas. This is a classic Christmas horror movie focuses on what happens when he snaps and goes on a killing spree. Another slasher with a holiday twist, this has a large cult following.

8. Tales From The Crypt-The Robert Zemeckis Collection
All Through the Night is the story of a woman who murdered her husband on Christmas Eve. The thrills don't stop there as she is soon terrorized by a killer. While this is the only Christmas horror movie on the disc, it is certainly worth watching.

9. Don't Open 'til Christmas
This British slasher is about a killer murdering men dressed like Santa in London. Very violent, and sort of trashy, this is a cult classic Christmas horror movie. If you're a fan of 1980's slasher horror, check this one out.

10. Santa's Slay
This time, Santa's a demon who lost a bet to angel and has to perform good deeds. When he's done with the good deeds, he goes on a killing spree. This Christmas horror movie mixes some comedy in with the scares.

If you want a break from the usual feel good Christmas film this holiday season, why not try one of these? All of movies may not be masterpieces, but they are entertaining and thrilling. Watching a Christmas horror movie is certainly a different way to get into the holiday spirit.
