Ten Creative Peanut Butter Pairings

Madeline
Peanut butter and jelly is fine, but you've got to be original in this world. Growing up, my family was pretty adventurous with peanut butter pairings. Although I have encountered my share of horrified expressions from the culinary unadventurous, keep an open mind and let me introduce you to ten peanut butter combinations that don't include jelly.

1. Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches
Of course, Elvis made this one famous. I eat my peanut butter and banana sandwiches on regular bread, instead of grilled like the King. It's the ultimate comfort food.

2. Peanut Butter and Apple Slices
Dipping apple slices in peanut butter is a delicious, high-protein snack.

3. Peanut Butter and Pretzels
Pretzel rods are ideal for dipping into peanut butter, too.

4. Peanut Butter on Celery with Raisins: "Ants on a Log"
Remember this when you were a kid? Spread peanut butter on a celery stick and top it with ants, uh . . . I mean raisins. An oldie but a goodie!

5. Peanut Butter and Bacon on Toast
I love, love, love this! Everyone in my family ate this as a high-protein breakfast, so I had no idea that some people might find it unusual. It wasn't until I was in high school that some of my friends voiced their shock.

6. Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Sandwiches
This one is not high on the list for nutrition, but it's certainly tasty.

7. Peanut Butter and Sweet Pickle Sandwiches
I cannot personally vouch for this combination because I'm not a huge fan of sweet pickles. But my mom and sister tell me that the salty-sweet combination is delicious.

8. Peanut Butter and Coffee Cake
Just imagine slathering a slice of cinnamon coffee cake with a thick layer of creamy peanut butter. Yum.

9. Peanut Butter and Pain aux raisins
As a college student, I spent an academic year abroad in France. Unfortunately, peanut butter was not easy to come by. I was a bit homesick, and nothing says "home" to me like peanut butter. My mom sent me a special care package, and I went about putting peanut butter on whatever I could find-French bread, French pastries. "Pain aux raisins", similar to that good 'ol American coffee cake, fit the bill. My French friends were horrified.

10. Peanut Butter and Nutella Sandwiches
Keeping with my European peanut butter combos, I really enjoy the Italian chocolate-hazelnut spread, Nutella, paired with peanut butter. It reminds me a bit of a Reese's peanut butter cup.

Peanut butter lovers, don't be ashamed! Go ahead and eat this perfect food with whatever you like. What do you like with your peanut butter?

I have to try the Peanut butter and coffee cake!
And on a totally unrelated note, since you noted the connection about an adopted older child in a comment you left for me. Did your relative's children crave bananas? I always wondered about that. Our son loved bananas when he first got here and I always wondered why. I think it was something in them (potassium?) that he needed. He loved peanut butter too.

Peanut butter & pickles - I don't think so. I'll be willing to try the bacon even if it does sound weird. Bananas are my favorite with peanut butter. Great article!
