Ten Easy Tips for Spring Maintenance on Your Car

Rose Alexis
With warm weather finally here or fast approaching, many people are doing their annual Spring cleaning and maintenance on their home, in their garages, on their lawns and in preparation of their yard sales. The one area that many people overlook, however, is in doing spring maintenance, so to speak, on their vehicles.

Chances are high that the average person spends more time in their car during the warm-weather months than they do during the colder ones when they are more apt to stay bundled up and warm at home. Ensure the safety of your family is at its highest by getting your vehicle inspected and updated during these warmer car-oriented months. The following tips will help guide you.

One: Make sure you get your oil upgraded to high-performance oil, if the manufacturer of your vehicle allows for it. These types of motor oils are more efficient than mineral types and also help to reduce the friction and thus the heat that goes on to your engine.

Two: Check your tires. Make sure they have the proper amount of air pressure in them, that the tread is sufficient for sustained driving, and that there are no cracks, punctures or debris imbedded into them.

Three: Get your battery checked. Make sure connections are tight, corrosion is removed and that the terminals are cleaned and properly lubricated.

Four: Have your antifreeze replaced. Keeping old antifreeze in your car can lead to a whole plethora of issues you do not want to deal with, including a ruined engine caused by overheating. Replacing the antifreeze is a very inexpensive way to take good preventative measures on the upkeep and maintenance of your vehicle.

Five: Check all headlights, brake lights, interior lights, etc. If you find any dim or no longer working, replace them immediately.

Six: Get your belts and hoses checked for wear. You also want to make sure clamps are on securely and that belts are not loose.

Seven: Have a transmission flush if you haven't had one in approximately 30,000 miles. You also want to make sure your oil is in good condition, and that your brake and power steering fluids are not in need of replacement or filling (never fill over the maximum line because you could cause irreparable damage).

Eight: Make sure injectors are free of clogs and running smoothly, if applicable. You may also want to get a throttle body flush to ensure your car continues to run smoothly.

Nine: Have a computer hooked up to your engine at your local car mechanic or car dealer's office. These engines are terrific in that they take very little time, are cost efficient and can determine any problems your engine may be having far before you would be able to detect them on your own.

Ten: Keep your eyes open. Check the spot where you park your car regularly. Make sure there are no leaking fluids or stains coming from your vehicle. Should either of the aforementioned occur, it is advisable to get your automobile in for repair as quickly as possible.

It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Never is that saying more true than in the upkeep and maintenance of a car or truck. With the warm weather abounding, it is the perfect time to put your vehicle through a thorough check up and maintenance routine. Make a habit of it semi-annually. It does not take much time to do so and with the time and money you are bound to save in doing so, your vehicle, and your wallet, will thank you.
