All Along The Watchtower
Bob Dylan's original appears on his album John Wesley Harding in 1967. However, Jimi Hendrix's version on his 1968 release in my opinion is the ultimate Bob Dylan cover. Hendrix version resembles more the version Dylan plays today!
Knockin' on Heavens Door
Bob Dylan's original appears on Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid Soudtrack released in 1973. However, in 1991 the Dylan classic was a hit for Guns and Roses on their Use Your Illusion II album.
Like A Rolling Stone
Bob Dylan's version appears on Highway 61 Revisited in 1965. The Rolling Stones released a live cover of the song on their 1995 album Stripped. The Stones after all would know how it feels to be like a rolling stone.
Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You
Bob Dylan released the song on his 1969 album Nashville Skyline. The Jeff Beck Group covered the song in 1972 on their untitled album. You know I was going to throw in Jeff Beck, however this was the blues rock version of Jeff Beck.
Girl From The North Country
Pete Townsend of the Who performed this song live on the album Pete Townsend Live: A Benefit for Maryville Academy in 1999. It is a simple version nothing fancy like the original from The Free Wheelin' Bob Dylan of 1963.
Born In Time
Since we are in a stretch of legends covering Bob Dylan I didn't want to break the streak. I also thought it was important to point out Bob Dylan didn't stop writing songs in the 60's and 70's. Bob Dylan recorded the song on his Under the Red Sky album released in 1990. Eric Clapton covered the song on his Pilgrim album in 1998.
One More Cup of Coffee
Bob Dylan recorded the song on his 1976 album Desire. Robert Plant recorded the song on the Dreamland album with his band the Strange Sensation in 2002. The album was mostly covers and one of Robert Plant's better bands.
Forever Young
Bob Dylan recorded this song on his Planet Waves album in 1974. I will go on Rod Stewart's version since; he had pretty good radio airplay with his take of the song. Rod Stewart recorded the song on his Out of Order album in 1988.
I Shall Be Released
The song was recorded in 1968 by his back up band The Band on their legendary album Music from Big Pink. Dylan would recorded on his 1971 Greatest Hit album. It is a great song done by a great band.
Tambourine Man
The Bryds recorded this song in 1965 on an album by the same name. The Bryds were filled with talent and covered several Bob Dylan songs. It is important to include some of his folk rock peers on the list. Dylan recorded also in 1965 on his Bringing it All Back Home album.

Post a CommentThere are literally so many absolutely brilliant and ingenious songs from the 1960's and '70's from this poetic master that I can't imagine attempting to narrow it down to a top ten. And his wonder and magic continues recently with most, if not all, songs on Gylan's "Modern Times" CD released several years ago as well as another subsequent CD which, I'm ashamed to say, I don't know the title of nor have I heard the songs. I acn assure Bob and evryone else that I will get familair with that one as well very, very soon. Many of the offerings from the "Modern Times: CD are similar to the Dylan of the '60's % '70's. Absolutely FANTASTIC !!!
All Along The Watchtower & Knockin' on Heavens Door are two of my very favorite songs! Thanks for sharing.
Oh, my, my, my! I am having such a nostalgia rush. Dylan was/is my main musical favorite from the day (& as you point out, he's still at it)... and you didn't even get around to Joan Baez & Peter, Paul & Mary's versions. Do you know the weird film "I'm Not There," with so many covers of so many Dylan songs? I wouldn't recommend it to many people, but I would recommend it to the author of this wonderful article.
