Movie: The Color Purple
What's Going On: After finally getting the courage to leave Mister and starting her new life, Celie and Shug are walking through a field.
Spoken by: Shug Avery (as played by Margaret Avery)
Quote: "I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it."
Why It's Significant: This was one of the quotes that I highlighted when I read the book as well. To me this movie quote is important because so often we get bogged down with everything going on around us. Sometimes we just need to stop, chill and enjoy the little things. Essentially, in life every person just wants to be noticed and know that we matter. Noticing the color purple is noticing one's existence.
Movie: All About You
What's Going On: Nicole is trying to tell Brian her secret, but is unable to do so. He asks her what it would take to try love again.
Spoken by: Nicole (as played by Renee Elise Goldsberry)
Quote: "Assurance. I mean an escape clause. I mean a 100 % money -back guarantee, if you will. I need to know, that I know, that I know."
Why It's Significant: All About You is one of my favorite independent films. I love this movie quote because both Nicole and Brian are struggling to figure out who they are and what they want. I think a lot of us would like to know exactly how things are going to turn out, but of course life isn't like that. For some reason that scene really hit home with me.
Movie: The Devil Wears Prada
What's Going On: Andy complements Emily on her slender appearance.
Quote: "It's for Paris, I'm on this new diet. Well, I don't eat anything and when I feel like I'm about to faint I eat a cube of cheese. I'm just one stomach flu away from my goal weight."
Spoken by: Emily (as played by Emily Blunt)
Why It's Significant: This quote isn't really important to the story. But it is an overt statement about the fashion industry and the extreme's that some go through to see slim. But I listed it because it is hands down, the funniest line in the film.
Movie: Deliver Us From Eva
What's going on: Eva is explaining to her sister's boyfriend and her two brothers-in-law the difference between men in women during a battle over using the den to watch a football game or hold a book club discussion.
Spoken by: Eva Dandridge (as played by Gabrielle Union)
Quote: "I would say that I find your particular brand of crack amusing. This isn't about a book versus a football game, fellas. Oh, no. This is about men versus women. Women who aspire to culture and men who aspire to scratch themselves. Women who bear the burdens in life and men who create those burdens. Women who uplift humanity and men who uplift lap dances. If society were left to the whims of men, we'd still be in caves carving pictures with our non-opposable thumbs. So, today gentlemen, is a day for civilized behavior. Today we women raise our voices against tyranny, crudeness and play-off games. And that is it, gentlemen. End of story. The fat lady is singing! Out of the room. By the way, if any of that was lost upon you, then I've just proven my point again. Excuse me"
Why it's significant: this is the movies first "Eva-ism." In the film, she is known for her no nonsense personality and her penchant for sharing her vast knowledge and wisdom. This movie quote gives the viewer a sneak preview into the character of Eva. Gabrielle Union's delivery is perfect and the reaction of the men is priceless.
Movie: Love Jones
What's Going On: Nina returns to Chicago from New York and goes to the Sanctuary club for open mic night.
Spoken by: Nina Mosley (as played by Nia Long)
Quote: "It is the color of light, the shape of sound high in the evergreens. It lies suspended in hills, a blue line in a red sky. I am looking at sound. I'm hearing the brightness of high bluffs and almond trees. I am tasting the wilderness of lakes, rivers and streams caught in an angle of song. I am remembering water that glows in the dawn. The motion tumbled in earth. Life hidden in mounds. I am dancing a bright beam of light. I am remembering love."
Why It's Significant: This is the moment where Nina let's her guard down and speaks to Darius in his language...poetry. It is hands down one of the best scenes in the movie. Her vulnerability is palpable. You can't help but be moved when watching it.
Movie: The Runaway Bride
What's Going On: Maggie goes to talk to Ike after a lot of soul searching.
Spoken by: Maggie Carpenter (as played by Julia Roberts)
Quote: "I love Eggs Benedict, I hate every other kind. I hate big weddings with everybody staring. I'd like to get married on a weekday while everybody's at work. And when I ride off into the sunset, I want my own horse."
Why It's Significant: This movie quote is significant because the marks the moment where Maggie comes to terms with who she is and what she likes. By sharing this with Ike, she is able move on and find happiness.
Movie: The Hours
What's Going On: Virginia is having a disagreement with her husband about where they live.
Spoken by: Virginia Woolf (as played by Nicole Kidman)
Quote: "This is my right; it is the right of every human being. I choose not the suffocating anesthetic of the suburbs, but the violent jolt of the Capital, that is my choice. The meanest patient, yes, even the very lowest is allowed some say in the matter of her own prescription. Thereby she defines her humanity. I wish, for your sake, Leonard, I could be happy in this quietness (she pauses) But if it is a choice between Richmond and death, I choose death."
Why It's Significant: In my opinion, his movie quote is the reason that Nicole Kidman is an Oscar winner. She transformed physically into the great Virginia Woolf and embodied her pain, anguish and ultimate desire to choose her own destiny.
Movie: The Brothers
What's Going On: Louise schools the young women on how to tell if a man really loves you.
Spoken by: Louise Smith (as played by Jenifer Lewis)
Quote: "Well, it's really very simple. There's one sure way to tell if a man really loves you. Come here. When it's late and you're all hugged up pm the sofa and eatin' food and watchin' TV and you're just all over each other. Well, if he will give you his last piece of food, the very last bite...baby, that's love."
Why It's Significant: This movie quote is great because I don't know a woman who hasn't tried to figure out whether "he loves me, he loves me not." Whether the advice works or not, it's a nice test.
Movie: Akeelah and the Bee
What's Going On: Dr. Larabee tries to see what Akeelah is really made of.
Spoken by: Akeelah (as played by Keke Palmer)
Quote: "Prestidigitation. P-R-E-S-T-I-D-I-G-I-T-A-T-I-O-N. Prestidigitation."
Why It's Significant: This movie quote if significant because 1. It proves that Akeelah has a talent and 2. I just like the word.
Movie: The Color Purple
What's Going On: Sofia confronts Celie out in the field after learning that Celie has advised Harpo to beat Sofia in order to control her.
Spoken by: Sophia (as played by Oprah Winfrey)
Quote: "All my life I had to fight. I had to fight my daddy. I had to fight my uncles. I had to fight my brothers. A girl child ain't safe in a family of men, but I ain't never thought I'd have to fight in my own house!"
Why It's Significant: This is one of the most recognizable movie quotes of all time. Probably because it was spoken by the woman that would soon become the queen of media. But also it is significant because it shows Sofia as a woman who stands up for her self which is a trait that Celie lacks and admires in Sofia.
