Ten Great Pop Songs of 1973

James R. Ford
Here is a list of ten great pop songs from 1973.

All of these songs listed are included in Billboard's top 50 singles of 1973.

A simpler time, perhaps, when we all had a transistor radio, and listened to American Top 40 with Casey Kasem.

These are songs we have heard a million times and usually sing out loud when no one is around.

1. You Are The Sunshine Of My Life by Stevie Wonder

One of the best Stevie Wonder songs ever! An AM radio classic!

lyric: : "...you are the sunshine of my life, that's why I'll be around you..."

2. My Love by Paul McCartney and Wings

A simple, slow, silly love song. Written by Paul for wife Linda.

lyric: "...woh woh woh woh, my love does it good..."

3. Killing Me Sofly With His Song by Roberta Flack

Roberta was so overcome with Don McLean's song, American Pie, she wrote this one.

lyric: "..strumming my pain with his fingers, singing my life with his words..."

4. Stuck In The Middle With You by Stealers Wheel

Another AM radio classic. I can't hear this song anymore without thinking of Quentin Tarantino's movie, Reservoir Dogs.

lyric: "..clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am stuck in the middle with you..."

5. Kodachrome by Paul Simon

Probably the only number one song to use the word crap. It was bleeped out on some radio stations.

lyric: "...when I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, it's a wonder I can think at all..."

6. Ramblin Man by The Allman Brothers

A great song to hear when you're driving down Highway 41.

lyric: "...Lord I was born a ramblin man, trying to make a living and doing the best I can..."

7. Sing by The Carpenters

A happy song. Most hip people would never admit to liking this song. Chances are, they can la la like the best of us.

lyric: "...don't worry that's it's not good enough for anyone else to hear, just sing, sing a song..."

8. Your Momma Don't Dance by Loggins and Messina

And your daddy don't rock and roll.

lyric: "...there's a light in my eye and a guy says out of the car long hair, oo wee, you're coming with me, said the local police..."

9. Drift Away by Dobie Gray

Re-made into a hit a few years ago by some dude named Uncle Kracker.

lyric: "...give me the beat boys to free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away..."

10. Midnight Train To Georgia by Gladys Knight and the Pips

I always wanted to be a Pip. You know, dance in a circle and sing wooh hooh!

lyric: "...he's leaving (leaving), on a midnight train to Georgia (leaving on a midnight train to Georgia, wooh hooh)..."

If these songs are not on your Ipod or MP3, you've got some major problems.

Listen up!

Yes. Roberta Flack had such an amazing tone. I listen to the 70's channel on the Comcast music channel some times too. These old songs take me back to my youth with all its memories.

Interesting. Funny thing, yesterday I was skimming the music channels on our satellite and I ended up listening to the 70's station. I ended up staying on the channel for a while. I still love the old music. Some of these are my favorites, too, especially Killing me softly with his song.
