Ten Great Pop Songs of 1974

James R. Ford
Here is a list of ten great popular songs from 1974. All of these songs are listed in Billboard's top selling singles of 1974. A simpler time, perhaps, when we all listened to AM radio. These are songs we have heard a million times and usually sing in the shower, when we think that no one is listening.

1. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd

The most important band in southern rock history.

lyric: " ...sweet home Alabama, where the skies are so blue..."

2. Money - Pink Floyd

By the way, which one's pink?

lyric: "...money, it's a hit, don't give me that do goody good bullshit..."

3. Please Come To Boston - Dave Loggins

Nominated for a Grammy award.

lyric: "...please come to Boston, she said no, would you come home to me..."

4. Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas

Released because America had a fascination with the martial arts, most notably, kung fu.

lyric: "...everybody was kung fu fighting, those cats were fast as lightning..."

5. Cats In The Cradle - Harry Chapin

Harry, keep the change.

lyric: "...when you coming home dad, I don't know when, we'll get together then son, you know we'll have a good time then..."

6. I Can Help - Billy Swan

Everytime I heard this, I thought it was Elvis.

lyric: "...I can help, I've got two strong arms, let me help..."

7. Rock On - David Essex

A top ten classic with a heartbeat pulse.

lyric: "... hey kids rock and roll, rock on, ooh my soul..."

8. Bennie And The Jets - Elton John

Ba ba ba bennie and the jetssssss.

lyric: "...she's got electric boots, a mohair suit, you know I read it in a magazine oh, oh..."

9. Hooked On A Feeling - Blue Swede

Originally, a a hit for BJ Thomas.

lyric: "...ooga chakka, ooga ooga ooga chakka..."

10. Black Water - The Doobie Brothers

All the great harmonies in just one song.

lyric: "...I'd like to hear some funky dixieland, pretty mama come and take me by the hand..."

These songs are a must for your Ipod or MP3 player.

Yeah, I was 15 and AM radio was great. They played all the pop songs. I bought the 45's and played them all the time.
