Post a CommentGreat ideas! I've been getting unique stuff for my elderly parents at http://www.firststreetonline.com for a couple of years. The coolest thing was a full page size lighted magnifier that makes it easy for my mom to read without always adjusting the magnifying device or moving it across each paragraph as she reads. She uses it every day.
Another great little gadget for seniors are reading glasses with lights in them.
They are regular reading glasses but have bright led lights built into the sides and are only about 20 bucks.
You can buy them at :

A perfect phone for seniors is the Just5 cell phone. It is designed with big buttons and bright display that can make communicating easier despite vision problems. The phone is also equipped with PERS features that can save their lives in just a press of the SOS button. My grandma was in fact saved by this phone over a dozen times already in just a year of using this phone. I learned about this phone at www.just5.com.
These definitely are things that I should get for my Granny. Thanks for the list. It was my Grandma's birthday last week and I got her a gift that I think should have been in this list too. It's actually a cellphone made specifically for seniors. It's a cellphone with big buttons, it has louder volume, it is devoid of the technicalities that our old folks would definitely not want to learn and it has an emergency button. I was so excited when I bought this. Well, if for instance you find this quite interesting, you might want to visit their website at www.just5.com. Thanks for the post again!
Very important gadgets for the age group most overlooked by advertisers. Regarding the magnifier, I believe there are flat magnifiers using so-called Fresnel lens which can be kept in your wallet. They can be found in various sizes, from credit card to full page size. Since they're made of somewhat flexible plastic they're quite resistant to breakage.
It's kind of depressing to think about ever needing these.
Jean, these are fantastic ideas. I've seen several of them advertised (and not always for sr.s either...) I love the phone idea with the pictures. I think we have that with our cell phones now to an extent, but for different reasons. You picked 10 great ones... my mom is almost 60, not quite old, per se, but she carries a little magnifying pocket glass with her everywhere she goes for menus and things when she needs boost her glasses don't give her. Anyway, great picks!
Excellent suggestions. I could use a few of these items for myself and I'm only 36! Good job!
As someone who has a parent in this age group, I can vouch for many of these as being EXCELLENT. The large button universal remote is a must, as is the anti-scalding device. Some of these I have not heard of but I am printing out this list, for sure!
What a great article. Wonderful suggestions.
