Ten Great Quotes About Mothers

A List Just Right for Mother's Day

Tricia Goss
Are you searching for just the right thing to say on Mother's Day? Perhaps you want to make a homemade Mother's Day card for your mom, grandmother, sister, wife, or friend and you wish you had the perfect quote to use. Or maybe you are a mother, and you would like to read some uplifting quotes about mothers. You might enjoy the following list of my favorite ten quotes about mothers, in no particular order, just in time for Mother's Day.

Mothers often try to keep the peace at home, all the while remaining selfless, which is why the following quote made my list:

1. A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie. ~ Tenneva Jordan

The love a mother feels for her child is unparalleled, except for the very love of God! This is why the next quote deemed a spot on my list:

2. Before you were conceived I wanted you. Before you were born I loved you. Before you were here an hour I would die for you. ~ Maureen Hawkins

The next quote made my list because of the hope it provides. If you feel that, as a mother, you are not making a difference, consider this quote:

3. All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. ~Abraham Lincoln

Having been a mother who has worked both outside the home and at home, I attest wholeheartedly to the following quote, which is why it made a spot on this list:

4. The phrase "working mother" is redundant. ~Jane Sellman

Mothers are truly their child's first love. Whether that relationship is always sweet or not, it is what it is, which is why this quote made my list:

5. A mother is she who can take the place of all others but whose place no one else can take. ~Cardinal Mermillod

This list couldn't possibly be considered complete without a biblical quote. This one made my list because I do believe if you strive to be this type of mother - of woman - you will be blessed. I suggest you read the entire chapter, but for now I'll include a wonderful verse:

6. Her children arise up, and call her blessed. ~Proverbs 31:28

Mothers are inherent worriers. Whether a mother's child is 2 or 42, she's bound to be concerned for that child's welfare, which is why the next quote made my list:

7. Sweater, n.: garment worn by child when its mother is feeling chilly. ~Ambrose Bierce

Although, in my opinion, a mother should be more parent than friend, at least in childhood years, I do believe the heart of any mother holds the truest form of love and friendship for a child. This is why the next quote made my list:

8. A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts. ~Washington Irving

Mothers constantly have their children in their hearts and minds. And even though many mothers - myself at the top of this list - admit that they have made decisions in their lives that were not ultimately the best for their child, I do believe most mothers have the best interests of their child at heart. That is why this quote made my list:

9. When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. ~Sophia Loren

And finally, because mothers often second-guess themselves, and wonder if they will ever really know what they are doing, I offer this final quote, in the hopes that mothers everywhere will feel encouraged:

10. I really learned it all from mothers. ~Dr. Benjamin Spock
