TEN GREAT ROCK and ROLL FOURTH of JULY PARTY SONGS
Here's How to Get Your Party Started to a Patriotic Beat
What better music to commemorate our country's birthday than rock 'n roll, a musical style born in the USA? Here are some great tunes to help you dance the night away at your Independence Day party:
1. AMERICAN PIE by Don McLean
"Bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry"
It's the longest song in the recorded history of man, I don't really understand what it's about, and the lyrics are downright depressing. But it has the word "American" in it, and it's a classic that everyone can sing along to so it makes my list of all-time greatest songs for a party on the 4th.
2. LIVING IN AMERICA by James Brown
"Living in America - eye to eye, station to station
Living in America - hand to hand, across the nation
Living in America - got to have a celebration"
When you've got to have a 4th of July celebration, this is the anthem for you. It's an especially fun sing-along if you happen to be partying in one of the cities mentioned in the song: New Orlean, Detroit City, Dallas, Pittsburgh, New York City, Kansas City, Atlanta, Chicago, and L.A
3. CALIFORNIA GIRLS by the Beach Boys
"Well, East coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear
And the Southern girls with the way they talk
They knock me out when I'm down there"
Okay, so this song doesn't mention USA or America, but it does, however, pay tribute to girls all across this great county of ours.
4. AMERICA by Neil Diamond
"Everywhere around the world
They're coming to America
Every time that flag's unfurled
They're coming to America"
A tribute to the immigrants (which includes all of our ancestors) who made our country great, this is an awe-inspiring ballad for your get-together.
5. AMERICAN GIRL by Tom Petty
"Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl"
Parties and girls - the two go together.
6. SURFIN' USA by the Beach Boys
"Tell the teacher we're surfin', surfin' USA"
This all-America singing group appears for the second time in the list with their up-beat salute to that all-America summer past time - surfing.
7. AFTERNOON DELIGHT by Starland Vocal Band
"Skyrockets in flight, afternoon delight"
Who says fireworks can only take place after sundown?
8. SATURDAY IN THE PARK by Chicago
"Saturday in the park, I think it was the Fourth of July"
The lyrics make this mellow tune a natural for your party.
9. AMERICAN WOMAN by The Guess Who or Lenny Kravitz
"American woman, she gonna mess your mind"
Again, parties and women.....there will be women at your party, right?
10. BORN IN THE USA by Bruce Springsteen
"Born in the U.S.A., I was born in the U.S.A."
All your guests will be singing this refrain at the top of their lungs. Whether you were born in the USA or not, this is one great Independence Day theme!
