Ten Great Songs to Play when You Want to Start a Dance Party in Your Bedroom

James Hamel
Just because you aren't cool or rich enough to get into the hottest dance clubs in your town doesn't mean you can't bust a move. Quite the contrary. There is a club that I can guarantee you can get into. It's called your bedroom and don't lie by saying you have never danced alone in your room. Or at least you have thought about it.

Just listening to pulsating, rhythmic dance music can be very soothing to a weary soul. It is also a great workout, builds co-ordination and it might even prepare you for a future on "So You Think You Can Dance?" So it's time to drop your inhibitions and stop caring what other people think. Because when you want to dance, you just have to dance.

"I Don't Feel Like Dancing" : (Scissor Sisters)

Oddly enough this Scissor Sisters song makes me feel like I should be dancing. This song will get lodged in your head and won't leave for a week. A real toe-tapper!

"I love the Nightlife (Disco Round): (Alicia Bridges)

This song features an awesome disco groove mixed with vocals that sound like they were sung by a woman who smoked a carton a day for the last 30 years. Alicia Bridges also looks like a mixture of Alice from "The Brady Bunch" and a truck driver. It was probably a good thing that music videos weren't invented back in the 1970's when Alicia Bridges was a disco star.

"Safety Dance" : (Glee Cast)

This song featured in a terrific episode of "Glee" (which was directed by "Buffy" creator Joss Whedon) where Artie dreamed he wasn't in a wheelchair. As you would imagine, a sweet dance routine ensued inside the local mall.

"Everybody Dance Now" : (C + C Music Factory)

Rapping + awesome diva vocal melody = dance classic.

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody" : (Whitney Houston)

Okay, this song is horrible but it always makes me want to dance.

"Block Rockin' Beats" : (The Chemical Brothers)

The perfect dance song if you just came home from a rave or really wish you had gotten into one. The rhythm of this song comes at you with some rather brutal force so be prepared for a unique sound.

"Ojos Asi" : (Shakira)

This latin/middle eastern fusion sounds like nothing else in contemporary American pop music. That fact is exacerbated by the fact that it is all in Spanish. But the song would definitely lose something in the translation to English. When you dance to this song, though, you must shake your hips like Shakira whether you are a guy or a girl!

"Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" : (Beyonce)

Just don't dance to this in a sequin unitard and post the video on YouTube. You don't want to be as lame as Joe Jonas.

"Rhythm Nation" : (Janet Jackson)

Don't even try to figure out the complex choreography from the old music video. Okay, go ahead if you want to spend the next five weeks glued in front of your TV.

"Last Dance" : (Donna Summer)

Like every dance party, there must be a last dance. And this song is just perfect for the occasion! Enjoy!
