Ten Holiday Gift Ideas for Fashionistas

Alexandra Morgan
Fashion is one of the fastest evolving fields around, what's in one month is out the next - so it can be tough to keep up with friends who are fashion followers. If you know someone who just loves fashion or is a professional in the industry, here are ten holiday gift ideas your fashionista friends will love. And the best part is, they are timeless ideas that won't go out of style.

1.) A Subscription To A Trend Site
Getting a subscription to an esteemed Trend Site is invaluable to anyone interested in fashion. Sites like TrenStop and PromoStyl are two of the best. If you're in the market to get your friend a subscription to one of the Danish Trend sites, I would recommend it, as I've heard they cover more of the left-of-center trends that often don't even make it across the ocean. These sites don't come cheap though, you'll pay roughly $1,000 - $15,00 for a yeaarly subscription to a good site, but for all you big spenders out there who can afford it, you'd be making some lucky fashionistas holiday wish come true.

2.) The Fashion Dictionary
Actually titled, "A Dictionary of Costume and Fashion: Historic and Modern" by Mary Brooks Picken ($17.95). This dictionary of fashion terms and pictures is an essential resource tool for any fashion writer or industry professional. A writer can better analyze the styles on the runway by actually becoming acquainted with the terminology and any industry professional should have all of these in daily vernacular.

3.) A Dress Form
If your friend designs clothing and doesn't have a dress form, this will be a gift he or she will love you for. A dress form allows a designer to drape the clothing over a body mold in order to unsure accurate measurements and alleviates the need to have a model present to "try on" while the creation is in progress. A Dress Form is a moderate priced gift, costing roughly $150 dollars, and can be purchased often times at your local fabric store.

4.) Sewing Machine
This is the obvious choice for a fashionista and it will cost you a bit for a nice one. But the newer models can do some amazing things that this girl's old Singer never could do. And hey - your friend may thank you by sewing something awesome for you.

5.) Sketch Book
Never underestimate the power of a simple sketch book. I design clothing and I'm constantly filling mine with collages, drawings, fabrics, etc. There's nothing worse than getting a great idea, finding that your sketch books are all full, and having to run out to the store and risk losing your creative gem. This one's a cheapie too, so there's no excuse for not finding something for your fashionista friend - when in doubt, get a sketch book.

6.) Fashion Films
Any of these films are good picks for fashion lovers:
Memoirs of a Geisha (not about fashion, but kinda, and so many beautiful costumes and visuals)
The Devil Wears Prada (of course)
Funny Face (The film in which Audrey Hepburne becomes a fashion model)
Pretty in Pink (yes, it's uber melo-dramatic 80's cornball, but it's so fashion-y)

7.) IN VOGUE: The Illustrated History of the World's Most Famous Fashion Magazine by Norberto Angeletti and Alberto Oliva
This is no inexpensive book, let me say that right now - it's honkin long and downright heavy, so it can double as a weapon incase of household intruders. Depending on sales and where you go to purchase this book, it's going to cost you somewhere @ $60. But "IN VOGUE" is a collector's item and for an impassioned fashionista, will be a timeless and invaluable resource.

8.) ANTM, Project Runway, or Stylista
When in doubt, try a DVD of the early seasons of America's Next Top Model or Project Runway. And for aspiring fashion writers, the new season of Stylista is a good bet.

9.) Foreign Fashion Mags
This will sound crazy to anyone not obsessed with fashion, but a great gift idea is the newest issue of a couple of foreign fashion mags. These babies are around $15 a pop, and if you love fashion, you probably buy at least 2 a month - that gets pricey. Go for Australian and British Vogue first.

10.) A Gift Card To Your Fashionista's Favorite Store
You can't go wrong with this one. Just ask your fashion forward friend where he or she usually buys accessories and clothes and pick up a gift card, that way your friend will be sure to get those most wanted items. The biggest fauz pas you can make with a fashion forward friend is to get the wrong item, so take the foolproof method and make your friend happy for the holidays.
