Ten Horrible Horror Movies

Nothing Frightening Here- Why You Should Skip These Horror Films

Jennifer Amlie
Some horror movies are so bad they're good. Some horror is just bad. I'm a big horror fan and I'm always looking for the next great movie that delivers the scares. Unfortunately, that means sitting through some truly awful films that make you want those last two hours of your life back. Here are 10 movies that are over-hyped, terrible remakes or just uninspired messes.

The Blair Witch Project: I remember the praise this film received. The story focuses on three college kids in the woods with nothing but their cameras hunting down a local legend. Too bad they forgot the tissues, as their runny noses in the camera were the only frightening part. Over-hyped to no end, this movie did not scare or interest me at all.

Psycho
(1998):
Unnecessary remake of a classic movie, it fails to capture the original's tense atmosphere. The movie is a shot by shot remake of the 1960 version. It adds no creativity or difference except color. Pass this and enjoy the original.

Boogeyman: Like countless other terrible horror movies, this one had a good trailer. Promising to explore the childhood fear of the Boogeyman, it's a shame the only worth while parts were in the previews. From the lack of suspense to the jerky camera work that fails to scare, there is nothing frightening in this film. All the special effects can't save a movie that has no thrills or plot.

Resident Evil Extinction
:
The first one was decent. The second was tolerable. The third is just plain bad. Another horror sequel gone wrong, Resident Evil 3 takes everything that made the video game great and ignores it. The story is very predictable and the zombies looked amateurish. There was nothing suspenseful about this one.

House of the Dead
:
Another horror movie based on a successful video game, it's the poster child for why movies need to rely on more than just a well known title. No plot, no scares and video game-like stats pop up on the screen for the characters; I had a strong urge to shut off the DVD when the fighting turned Matrix style. I watched it all and wished I didn't.

The Haunting
(1999):
A remake of the 1963 classic haunted house film, it has special effects that come off as silly, rather than frightening. Relying on these effects to create the same creepy atmosphere as the original doesn't work. It feels more like a second rate amusement park ride, you know the 'scare' is coming and when it does you don't care. The original is much better with no goofy effects.

The Messengers
:
I really was excited for this movie. The preview was interesting and promised a good haunted house story. I was sorely disappointed. The plot gets increasing convoluted and full of holes as the movie drags on. There are a few good pop out and scare you moments, but they don't make up for the horrible twist at the end.

The Ruins
:
Using the overdone premise of young adults in a foreign land who make the locals mad by uncovering a cursed place, The Ruins just doesn't scare. The movie suffers from predictable horror plot points and relies on gore instead of real suspense. I found it hard to care for the fate of the characters. The 'killer' in the movie didn't interest me either.

FeardotCom: Reminiscent of my favorite horror film, Ringu, this movie uses the internet instead of a cursed video tape. Expect this one is poorly executed with horrible dialogue and a thin plot that's hard to follow. There are some scary images sprinkled through out, but the effects can't save the movie. Skip this and watch Ringu.

One Missed Call
: I'm not a fan of American remakes of Japanese horror movies and this is the perfect example of why. Rottentomatoes named this the second worst reviewed movie of the last decade. This movie ignores the original's build up of fear and suspense. Instead, it gives the audience explosions and silly gimmicks that are suppose to be frightening. With a slapped together feel, One Missed Call, seemingly exists on the premise of Americans will flock to anything based on J-horror. Again, skip this and watch the 2004 original.

The horror movie genre is in desperate need of a make-over. There are few gems among the mountain of garbage that gets released every year, but these movies are not them. Whether they are over-hyped to the point of disappointment or just poorly remade, movies like the ones listed should be avoided.

    Good list.

Good choices. Unfortunately you could probably easily make this list 50 bad horror movies.

Of the ones that I've seen, I agree totally. Psycho, especially. Why people can't leave a perfect thing alone, I'll never understand.

Another one you could have added to the list was the remake of Black Christmas. Blair Witch was probably my least favorite, quickly followed by FearDotCom. Nice list.

I have watched several of those movies, I couldn't agree more, Great job!
