Ten Ideas for Halloween Costumes of Saints

David Farrell
Halloween, originally known as all hallow's eve, started out as a Christian feast day that was established to replace a druid feast celebrated around the same time. Over the years, Halloween has become a mainstream holiday. However, some Christian groups like to still celebrate the saints at this time of the year. What better way to celebrate All Saints' Day and still have Halloween than to dress up as a saint! Here are ten suggestions for saint Halloween costumes. There are five Halloween costumes for the guys and five Halloween costumes for the girls.

Saint Patrick Halloween costumes: For the basic version of Saint Patrick, you will need a plain green robe and some symbol of either a three leaf clover or a four-leaf clover. This can be cut out of a cardboard box or cereal box and either colored green or covered with green material. Some other symbol(s) associated with Saint Patrick can also be used. For the elaborate version, embellish the edges of the green robe with fancy silver or gold trim. Make it look more like a bishop robe as opposed to a plain robe. Add a crosier by using a stick with an elaborate cross attached to the top. A good way to procure such cross is to craft a hook out of aluminum foil. The hook hooks in a circle and comes upright to a cross. Add a bishop's miter and you are good to go. To make the miter, start out with a headband of cardboard. Construct the two panels and attach them to the cardboard band.

Saint Francis of Assisi Halloween costumes: The basic version uses a brown robe with a piece of white or manila rope tied around the waist. Add any stuffed animal or animal picture to represent Saint Francis's love for God's creation. For the elaborate version, add a Rosary and hang it from the cord. Wear a brown (or black) hoodie under the robe or sew a hood onto the robe. Add a fake beard or removable dark face paint that resembles a beard. A crucifix or other appropriate religious symbol also helps.

Saint Joseph Halloween Costumes: Here we use the brown robe again, however we do not tie a cord around the waist. Add a few tools and you are good to go. For the detailed version, start out with the robe and add carpenter tools, wood, and a white lily. Representations, cutouts, or pictures of these will do. The fake beard or face paint is needed for this costume as well. Another thing you can add is a large doll dressed to represent the baby Jesus. All the doll needs is a white robe and a halo.

Moses Halloween Costumes: A red robe does well for this costume. Cut out two tablets out of cardboard and color them gray. For the sophisticated version, wear a red robe with a cord tied around the waist. Add a false white beard and long white hair. The hair and beard can be made of white yarn, but it may be better just buying one at a store. The tablets can either be made from one of those cardboard tombstones that people put on their lawns, or made from cardboard. Paste gray paper on the tablets. Add the numerals I, II, and III to the first tablet, and IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X to the second tablet with a black marker.

Saint George Halloween costumes: Saint George was a roman soldier, so the Saint George Halloween costumes should be constructed out of red robes and gray or silver armor. A simple version is a red robe worn under plastic armor. Add a sword and a helmet and you are good to go. For the sophisticated version of this Halloween costume, add detail to the aforementioned elements. A shield with an emblem of a dragon is perfect for Saint George Halloween costumes.

Those are five Halloween costumes for common male saints. Here are ideas for five Halloween costumes for girls.

Blessed Virgin Mary Halloween Costumes: Wear a blue robe over a white plain skirt. Add a white veil and you have the simple version of this costume. For the advanced costume, wear a blue robe over a white robe and the veil. Add Rosary beads if desired, as the Rosary is often associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Saint Joan of Arc Halloween Costumes: As Saint Joan of Arc became famous for rallying and leading the French army in the fifteenth century, use armor, boots, a sword, and a helmet for these Halloween costumes. Details can include more elaborate armor and a symbol such as a stake.

Saint Elisabeth of Hungary Halloween Costumes: This is a fun costume because you can dress up as a princess or a queen in this one, depending on what period of her life you ant to reflect. Use any robe for this one; more simple for the princess, more royal for the queen. Here you can be creative; white, blue, pink, and similar colors work well for the princess. Royal purple can be used for the queen. Add a makeshift crown for the queen. As she was very religious, a religious symbol such as a cross works well.

Saint Maria Goretti Halloween Costumes: Saint Maria Goretti lived around the start of the twentieth century and chose to die rather than lose her virginity. My suggested Saint Maria costume is a white robe over a red sweatshirt/long sleeved shirt. The white represents innocence and purity, and the red represents martyrdom. Add white silk flowers and you are good to go.

Lucia and Jacinta of Fatima Halloween costumes: For Jacinta and Lucia as a shepherd, wear a skirt and long sleeved shirt resembling those worn around the turn of the century. A ladies button-down shirt of a solid white should do the trick. If you have a Carmelite Nun costume, you can also dress up as Sister Lucia as a nun. A simple way to do this is to dress in a brown robe and veil.

For more Halloween costumes of saints, pick a favorite saint and research him or her on the Internet until you get the saint's story as well as a good picture of the saint. Then construct a costume that reflects that saint. Knowing the saint's story is helpful because then when people inquire about the saint out of curiosity, you can have an answer for them rather than be embarrassed. Happy Halloween and happy All saints day.
