It is true, chivalry may be dead but it can be revived with the help of willing parents. Parents can help to restore the concept of chivalry by teaching their sons basic manners. Teaching children manners should be as important as them learning to write their name or memorizing their telephone number. Children who are taught manners at an early age may have a greater chance at having a more prosperous life. Below are some simple manners that your son should know.
1. Teach your son to hold the door for women. Holding the door for others is not only helpful it is respectful. It will also make your kid feel great when the lady that he holds the door for thanks him.
2. Teach your child to help older neighbors with their bags when they get home from a shopping trip. Allow your child to help only if you are friendly with your neighbors and feel safe with your kid being around them. Be sure to let your child know not to expect or ask for money.
3. If your child is old enough to stand safely on his own teach him to stand up for older women, pregnant women, and those with disabilities when riding public transportation. This is just common courtesy that even some adults even lack. If you can teach your child this polite gesture he'll shine above the rest.
4. Teach your son to keep body noises at a minimum. Boys tend to be slightly raunchier than girls and will pass gas and burp without hesitance. It is important that you instill into your son the importance of appearance. Teach him to leave the gas passing and loud belching for the confines of the bathroom.
5. Teach your son not to wear hats indoors. Wearing a hat indoors was once viewed as very impolite and it is still viewed as impolite to some people especially those in private institutions. Some schools even ban wearing hats inside of the building.
6. Teach your son to talk it out as opposed to fighting. Boys are known to settle disputes with flying fists and cursing. If it can be helped, teach your son to use fighting as a last resort (in the instance where he has to defend himself.) A boy who solves his problems through fighting at a young age will fight through and not in a good way.
7. Teach your son that nose picking is not cool. Children are natural born explorers so it should not be a surprise that some of them will think that nose picking is cool. Nose picking is a pretty disgusting habit to pick up. If your son must pick his nose teach him to excuse himself and to use a tissue.
8. Teach your son to always wash his hands after using the bathroom. Everyone should be very familiar with this basic rule, but some boys feel as though the act of peeing as a guy does not require hand washing. Teaching your children to be sanitary is very important.
9. Teach your son not to curse around women. You should teach your son not to curse period. Cursing around women, the elderly and small children is very impolite. You should discourage your son from doing so.
10. Teach your son that calling young girls and women names and hitting them is not okay. Some girls may instigate the name calling but that does not mean your son has to follow through with obscenities. It may be hard for your son to stand there and take the name calling and or hits but he will come out as the bigger person in the end.
