Ten Perennial Flowers Guaranteed to Attract Hummingbirds

Perennial flowers are a gardener's best friend. Plant them once in the right location and they'll return year after year with very little assistance from the gardener. Many easy care perennials serve double duty by providing long lasting garden beauty and attracting various types of wildlife for up-close and personal viewing.

If hummingbirds are the type of wildlife you would like to see more of, these ten perennial flowers are guaranteed to attract hummingbirds to your landscape.

Bee Balm

Tall growing (4 feet), fragrant, self-propagating, proficient mid-summer blooming flowers that like moist soil and are irresistible to hummingbirds. Bee Balm comes in a variety of bloom colors that will work in any garden color scheme.

Cardinal Flower

Another tall growing (5 feet) perennial flower that prefers moist soil. Cardinal flowers will bloom throughout the summer and comes in bloom shades of red, pink and white.

Verbena

A perennial that will deliver red, pink, purple or white flowers and attract hummingbirds all summer when planted in moist soil. Verbena hates dry soil conditions and will stop blooming during periods of drought unless the plant is kept watered.

Butterfly Weed

A reddish-range blooming wildflower that is drought tolerant and will reach 3 feet in height.

Coral Bells

Coral Bells need partial shade and rich soil to perform their best. This perennial flower has colorful foliage and produces tall, long lasting wands of tiny flowers that hummingbirds dart in and out of, sampling the nectar.

Evening Primrose

This is good perennial flower choice for poor and/or dry soil conditions. Evening Primrose will produce yellow or pink flower on tall stems (3 feet) that may need support to remain upright.

Hyssop

Hyssop is a garden favorite for both hummingbirds and bees, producing a bushy plant loaded with blue-violet flower stalks in mid-summer. Hyssop is perfect for filling in gaps, reaching a mature height and width of 3 feet.

Red Hot Poker

Red Hot Poker makes a dramatic statement as a backdrop in a flower garden. This perennial flower reaches a mature height of about 4 feet and produces bright colored plumes in shades of red, orange, yellow and bi-colors. Red Hot Poker will not tolerate moist soil and needs to planted in rich, well-draining soil.

Salvia

Salvia comes in both the annual and perennial varieties. The easy-care perennial variety of salvia comes in a wide range of mature heights (1-5 feet) and produces bloom colors in shades of deep reds and purples.
