Temperature - Fall isn't too hot, and isn't too cold. If the wedding is outdoors, the groom and groomsmen won't have to worry about being way too hot in their tuxedos, and the bride won't have to worry too much about being cold in her gown.
Weather - For the most part in the US, fall has nice weather in many areas. The one big exception to this is hurricane season in the southeast part of the US. The days are temperate, the nights get a little cooler, but in general fall has some great days.
Foliage - At various times of the fall, there are beautiful natural displays of foliage as the leaves on deciduous trees change before they fall. New England has an especially stunning display. This fact alone makes fall worth planning a wedding for, I think.
Venue Pricing - The majority of weddings take place in the spring and summer. Take advantage of that, and check out the pricing and availability of venues for the fall. I bet you'll find much more places open, and the prices more accommodating to a budget.
Holidays - There are several holidays in the fall, including Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Rosh Hashanah. Many people will already have family in town for these; it might be a great opportunity to add in a wedding! Also, these holidays may hold a special place in the hearts of the happy couple, and that can bring a lot of meaning into a marriage ceremony - not that there's not a lot of meaning there already!
Long weekends - Columbus Day weekend is in the fall, and gives people some extra travel time. If you plan it right, it could coincide with foliage, too!
Harvest - If you'd like to have fresh food at your wedding, fall is when many vegetables are harvested. It could help you set a very cool, very original table. Pumpkins, corn, squash, and other vegetables are all ready in the fall.
Travel - Travel will be less expensive during the fall than it would be in the summer or winter time. School being back in session helps with this.
Less Tourists - Tourists will have gone home from many of the most popular tourist destinations, especially after Labor Day. You might enjoy having more privacy.
Longer Nights - If you plan to have an early evening wedding and you'd like it to be dark, it starts getting dark earlier in the fall, especially after the time changes.
