Ten Reasons to Mow Your Lawn

Lori Piper
I have been told that to mow one's lawn is the ultimate in creative leisure time for some. Well, let me tell you I am not presently in the "some" category.

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn-and not for leisure reasons.

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #1)

Are you a neat freak sort of person? Do you like your life to be categorized and organized? A freshly mowed lawn creates the illusion than all is well and dandy on the outside.

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #2)

Do you enjoy pretty things? Do you enjoy being in the running for best yard of the month? By all means, mow away. Then edge and mulch. Then sweep and rake. Yes, that sounds like a relaxing afternoon to me. Sweating outside with freshly mowed grass that causes my allergies to go crazy.

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #3)

Do you enjoy not being able to find your newspaper in the morning? As the lawn becomes higher, our newspaper carrier lobs the paper in a more centralized part of the lawn. A game to him, perhaps? A warning methinks.

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #4)

Have you received a bright orange notice placed strategically for all neighbors with prying eyes to see that you have ten days to mow your lawn or a ticket will be cited, daily until such time as the grass is cut?

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #5)

Do you have to brush your dogs several times a day once they come in from outside due to the inordinate amount of grass burrs in their fur?

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #6)

Are your dogs afraid to go outside because they sink and are gone from not only each other's sight, but yours as well? Now they have resorted to relieving themselves on the back porch rather than go out into the jungle.

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #7)

Have you dropped your keys and it took over ten minutes to find them? Even though you dropped them right at your feet in your front yard?

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #8)

Are you tired of having people knock on your door at all hours of the day and evening, offering to mow your lawn for you, for a highway robbery price?

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #9)

Are you tired of receiving looks from your neighbors, and the looks are no longer friendly and welcoming. Are they having home owners association meetings, without you present, but you and your yard are the topic?

Ten reasons to mow one's lawn #10)

Do you just get tired of looking at nothing but tall grass as the flowers you planted and pruned are lost?

Me? Personally, I mow the lawn on a regular basis, because if I do not, then the longer it becomes, the more difficult is it to mow!!! Mow once or have to repeat because the grass was so long to begin with that it takes two attempts to make it look even and pretty.

To summarize, I do not mow because I am anal retentive and enjoy having a beautifully manicured lawn that is the envy of my neighborhood. I do not mow because I am tired of living in fear of my neighbors. I do not mow because the city tells me I have to. I do not mow because my dogs are fearful of living in a jungle. I mow because it is the easiest thing to do. Fewer complications that way.

By the way, the yard looks great. What will our newspaper carrier think?
