Ten Reasons the Phillies Will Win the World Series in 2010

Roy Halladay is the Key

Rodney Southern
When the Phillies signed all world pitcher Roy Halladay this offseason, they pretty much punched their playoff ticket for 2010. With a team that reads like a who's who of All Star baseball, the Phillies are now in a position to completely dominate the National League. Here are ten reasons why the Phillies will win the World Series in 2010.

10. Roy Halladay

Perhaps no other pitcher in the Major Leagues has been any better than Halladay over the past decade. The guy is lights out consistent and will stabilize an already strong rotation. Imagine Roy Halladay as your game one starter in the World Series and knowing you have to face him again regardless. Intimidating.

9. Placido Polanco

This is a pick up that is kind of under the radar, but will make a huge difference at the top of the lineup. Shane Victorino has always needed to be lower in the lineup and Polanco will allow that to happen. He gets on base often and will give Jimmy Rollins room to run like he has always wanted to.

8. Cole Hamels Relaxation

Finally Cole can settle in and concentrate on pitching again. Since his World Series debut, he has struggled with being "the man" in the Phillies rotation. Now that Halladay is around he need not worry about that. Hamels will return to form in a big way and has already begun to show that in the spring.

7. Ryan Howard

Big Daddy Howard is enough of a reason to feel good about the Phillies run scoring ability all by himself. He will get his and he plays perfectly off those around him. Expect his 40 homers and 100 RBIs. They are like the sun rising and falling each day.

6. Chase Utley Rebound

Utley actually had a fairly down year last year, particularly with his average. Expect that to improve with the lineup change that Polanco is facilitating. Utley will go back to hitting over .300 once again.

5. Historical Motivation

Don't think that the Phillies do not realize that they are on the verge of being the National League representative to the World Series for a third straight year. Who would not want to be a part of history?

4. An Established Jayson Werth

Werth officially established himself as a star in 2009 and nobody questions that for a second anymore. For the last two years, he has been building his star. Now that he has "arrived" he will be even better than in previous years. That is scary in this lineup.

3. They are Built to Win the East

It would seem that playing in the power packed NL East would be a reason they might not win, but nothing could be further from the truth. The Phillies are stacked with offense and are built to win in the wide open east. Even if they fell short for the NL East crown, they will surely win the Wildcard. Once they are in the playoffs, I see no team beating them in a series.

2. The Team Attitude

The Phillies are one of the few teams that talk the talk when it comes to teamwork, while still walking the walk. Many teams say they are a team, but the Phillies actually show it on and off the field.

1. The Yankees are Ripening with Age

The Yankees are the odds on favorites by many of the experts and with good reason. They are loaded with talent as well. The reason I give the nod to the Phillies is because the Yankees are aging fast. Add into that mix that they lost Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui and it becomes obvious that they are ripe for the beating.
