Ten Reasons You Should Be Watching 'How I Met Your Mother'

Lisa Miller
If you haven't been watching CBS's hilarious sitcom How I Met Your Mother, now is a great time to start. Here are ten reasons why you should start tuning in:

10. What else is on?

Let's face it, there aren't many good sitcoms on television right now. Sure 30 Rock is still going strong and Community looks promising, but otherwise the comedy offerings on television are pretty weak. How I Met Your Mother delivers consistent laughs week after week and has some seriously clever writing. If you are missing out on How I Met Your Mother you are missing out on one of the funniest sitcoms on television right now.

9. Lily & Marshall

A happily married couple on network television? Yup, How I Met Your Mother has this rare television creature. Lily and Marshall (played by the amazing Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel) are genuinely in love and treat married life like an adventure. There are no petty squabbles or tired stereotypes to be found here. If you are tired of the unrealistic and insulting marriage jokes (men don't listen, women nag, hilarity ensues...) then check out How I Met Your Mother for a more positive portrayal of married life.

8. Barney & Robin

This is one of the most talked about couples on television today, and the reason is clear. Aside from having amazing chemistry, Barney and Robin (played by Neil Patrick Harris and Cobie Smulders) just make sense together. Why? Well, let me write in the form of an equation: 1 amazingly sexy actor + 1 amazingly sexy actress = television's hottest couple.

7. Ted & the Mother

The show's whole concept is all about the mother. Though we don't know who she is yet, tantalizing clues have been dropped throughout the series, making the mother one of television's most interesting unknown characters.

6. Continuity

There is no show on television now that does continuity better than How I Met Your Mother. On most sitcoms ideas and character quirks are brought up when they serve the episode and quickly forgotten soon after. This is not the case with How I Met Your Mother. Even sight gags and throwaway jokes get referenced, and character traits are never altered to fit the plot. This is one show that really rewards its regular viewers.

Add in the amazingly creative use of nested flashbacks (which often occur at break-neck speeds and include some of the funniest off-hand jokes on television) and foreshadowing of future occurrences, and you are left with a very smartly written show unlike anything on television right now.

5. Cast Chemistry

It's always fun to watch a television show when you know the cast is having a great time and love what they are doing. Watch any interview with the cast of How I Met Your Mother and you realize that the entire cast love to go to work every day and genuinely enjoy one another's company. That chemistry shines through on screen, making the friendships on the show seem genuine. What other sitcom has characters actually laughing at the jokes made by others?

4. Character Growth

It can be frustrating to watch a sitcom (or any television show for that matter) where character development is thrown out the window in service of a joke. On How I Met Your Mother characters grow and change and also act in accordance to what we know of the characters. It's twice as funny to hear Ted's pompous corrections of everyone around him, for example, because we know why that character would be doing it.

3. Robin Sparkles

The show just wouldn't be the same without Robin's teenage Canadian-popstar past. Sure, Robin Sparkles has made only two appearances on the show, but it's enough to make her one of the funniest characters on television. If you can watch Season 2's "Slap Bet" without getting "Let's Go to the Mall" stuck in your head, then you're made of stronger stuff than I.

2. Slaps

Speaking of "Slap Bet," there are still two slaps left to be administered from Marshall to Barney...it's complicated, just go watch that episode. You won't be sorry. Three slaps have already occurred (each more hilarious than the last) and waiting for the final two is proving to be more suspenseful than finding out the identity of the mother.

1. The Musical Episode

Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have confirmed that the 100th episode (happening this season) will be a musical episode. Why is this so exciting? Well, watch this and see.

How I Met Your Mother airs on CBS Monday nights at 8 p.m. / 7 c.

I wish we could get this in Peru! I've always thought it sounded good, but you've convinced me - I'm going to have to go to the black market and buy the past seasons.
