Ten Reasons Why I Love Kelly Cutrone

There's a Lot to Love About People's Revolution PR Power Girl

Kelly Cutrone runs People's Revolution, a bi-coastal high-fashion PR firm. She is also a reality TV star, first on MTV as LC and Whitney Port's scary as heck boss on The Hills, then as the star of her own series on Bravo, Kell on Earth. She dresses in all black, she doesn't comb her hair, and she literally says whatever pops into her brain, when it pops there. She can come off as abrasive, but there are literally hundreds of reasons to love this hippie/power girl hybrid. Here are just ten:

1. She works in fashion and doesn't comb her hair. How great is that? She puts on epic, intricate fashion shows in New York, LA and London, but doesn't bother to run a brush through her own hair. Plus, she dresses in comfy cotton t-shirts, cozy cardigans, and wide, flowing hippie tunics. What a great role model for young girls - and I mean that seriously. She appreciates the beauty of fashion, but she herself would rather be comfortable and in control of her own business than wearing the latest trends. Take note, teeny-boppers. Emulate the woman calling the fashion show, not the model on the runway who hasn't eaten in three weeks.

2. She tries to find dates for her staff. True, many of her staff work like dogs for slave wages (or in the case of interns - no wages), but Kell wants her protiges to have a life. Whether she's scoping out men on the street for her assistant Andrew or snagging the waiter's phone number for her business partner Robin, or yes, buying lube for another staffer's blind date, Kelly is always looking for ways to help her staff get some action.

3. She says funny stuff. Kelly is funny. When discussing her assistant Andrew's privileged upbringing she said he's been living with his "a** on the tub of butter." She nicknamed another Andrew on her staff who spends an irresponsible amount of time fake-baking, "Tandrew." And one of her most famous Kellyisms, "We're all hookers in one way or another." So true, Kell. Some just get paid better than others.

4. She's raising the cutest, sassiest little girl, ever. Her daughter Ava makes it on camera from time to time, and she's cute as a button. She's also sassy, but in an astute way, not so much a bratty way. When Ava found out she'd be sitting in the third row of a fashion show, she informed her mother she wouldn't be dressing up to sit in the third row. Who would? No one is going to see you back there, so you may as well be comfortable, kid. And when Kelly's mom called and informed Ava she was heading to Wal-Mart, Ava had a pint-sized stroke. "Don't go to Wal-Mart," she pleaded with grandma, "It's so bad there!" Smart kid. I'd hang out with her.

5. She makes it happen. I'm sorry, say what you will about the woman. She can be abrasive, she can be harsh. She can scream at an intern in a way that makes me so uncomfortable I have to turn away, but the woman gets it DONE. She owns a building in which she works and lives so that she doesn't miss out on time with her daughter. She can juggle multiple shows during Fashion Weeks on two coasts and multiple continents. When someone ditches on their bill to People's Rev, she holds their property. She can line up models, place photographers, calm her client, fill a room, spot a seat-stealer, remove the seat-stealer and make it to the booth to call the show without missing a beat.

6. She did meth, cops to it, but doesn't exploit it. It seems like a lot of celebrities hang their hats on their addictions these days. It's sexy to have been an addict or to have gone to rehab. In her book If You Have To Cry Go Outside, Kelly discusses her meth addiction, which she paid for by reading tarot cards on the beach. She doesn't advertise this tidbit or hang her hat on it as a critical moment in her journey to success. Other people writing a similar motivational-style memoir would have subtitled it "From Meth To Manhattan" or something. Kelly gives it a small mention, and tells us how she pulled herself out of it with the help of a guru. Done. No sexy rehab story. No dirty stories. She treats her former addiction the way people should treat such things. Part of the past.

7. She named her book If You Have to Cry Go Outside. That is the best professional advice someone can give a new college grad. Crying in the workplace is a huge no-no. And most of us figure that out the hard way. Heck, some ladies never figure that out and just burst into tears whenever the mood strikes. If I had known this 10 years ago, I could have saved myself a great deal of humiliation and saved my boss from a desperately awkward situation.

8. She takes her job as a role model seriously. She calls her self "Mama Wolf." She looks out for her staff as if they are part of her family. Her overworked and Vitamin C deficient family, but family none the less. She genuinely cares about what goes on in their personal lives and seems genuinely concerned about whether or not they are learning from her. Her entire book is a lesson in self esteem, self awareness and success for young women. And she genuinely wants her daughter to be proud of her. But she does this without coming off as fake or disingenuous.

9. She sometimes responds to her fans' Tweets. I'm sure it makes a fan's day to find out they got a direct tweet from @peoplesrev. Whether Kelly does this or she assigns someone else to, I'm not sure, but I hope she continues to do that. It shows she's as down to earth as she claims to be.

10. She's taking care of herself, her daughter, and their future. Kelly gets it. The economy is crashing and high fashion has taken a hit. Not to mention Kell can't run on high for the rest of her life. By slapping her firm on TV, creating a popular show and writing a book (which launched in tandem with the launch of the show - genius), she's expanding her reach and securing herself (and her daughter) financially. She could branch out in a million different directions from this point, and I, for one, can't wait to see where she goes.
