Ten Risks for Teenagers This Summer

Donna Davis
What risks do our teenagers face this summer? How can we help them prevent trouble before it starts?

Tanning, Sunburn and Cancer

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, almost 80 percent of teenagers will spend too much time in the sun even when they know the risks. Why? 60 percent of teenagers feel they look better tanned. How can they avoid danger? The AAD recommends avoiding mid-day sun, wearing a hat, and using sunblock.

Heat Exhaustion

35 percent of parents polled by the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) say they are concerned about their youths getting heat exhaustion. Parents can insist their youths carry water with them at all times.

Pertussis

Almost two out of three parents polled want their children to receive vaccinations. One of the main concerns is pertussis (whooping cough). Pertussis is the only disease among teenagers that can be prevented with vaccines. And untreated teens can infect others. Besides, immunity to pertussis can decline five to ten years after vaccination, in the child's teen years.

Sports Injury

First aid training is essential for our young ones. They should especially be aware of the symptoms of concussions. It is recommended that children play a variety of sports and take time off to recover. (American Academy of Pediatrics)

Food Poisoning

Awareness of the symptoms of food poisoning and education about the causes would be helpful.

Obesity

Yes, some youths will actually have less activity. Fitness should be key during summer months. Parents have generally opted to provide healthy food choices for their young ones.

Online Dangers

Since the young ones will be home more, they may be exposed to the internet for many more hours, thereby increasing the dangers of online predators. Don't forget to continue monitoring their internet activity.

Food Allergies

Our young ones are frequently out of our sight and with their friends. They may be more inclined to eat foods they are allergic without our supervision. Education should be our first line of defense.

Tick Bites

Yes, tick bites. Parents are concerned. Avoidance may be our only real defense. And insect repellents.

The Superbug

Labeled 'Swine Flu' or H1N1, this infection still causes concerns. We should promote good hand washing habits and other basic hygiene practices. And give our young ones a bottle of Purell.
