Putting yourself in your customer's shoes, how would you describe yourself? Are you talkative, extroverted, friendly? Do you regard yourself as a trained professional, a self-taught aficionado or a born natural? Whatever you see yourself as there are certain characteristics that are expected to come with the territory if you plan to succeed in selling your product. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Your communication skills. Train yourself to become a good listener who can easily identify the customer's needs and wants, and equate what they're hearing to how his or her product can fill that need.

2. Along the same line, make sure the communication is a two-way street. The key to two way communication is the ability to ask the right type of questions, helping to build rapport while encouraging the customer to discuss their needs more openly. Ensuring mutual communication will help you identify the customer's need more readily and react accordingly.

3. You must have both empathy and the drive to sell if you are serious about moving your product. Put yourself in the customer's situation and understand how you would be thinking if you were them. But empathy alone isn't enough--you must also have the drive to succeed. When you are passionate about what you're selling the customer is guaranteed to notice, making them stop to give your product closer scrutiny.

4. You must find a balance between your work and your leisure time. Develop an interest outside of work and spend quality time with those closest to you. It's important never to lose sight of your life's values; give your family and friends the time they need (and deserve) with you, and you'll find your work goes much more smoothly.

5. Stay focused on the customer. It's a well known fact that people do business with people they like and trust. This goes along with the importance of communication; not only is it important to listen to the customer, you must stay focused on their needs in order to fulfill them. Exceed their expectations in both product quality and customer service, and you'll find a loyal customer base in no time.

6. Don't underestimate the importance of the first impression. It's a sad fact that peoples' opinions of your are formed in the first minute they meet you, and those impressions are difficult to overcome if they're negative. Your voice, appearance, presentation, body language and words are all taken into account, so be certain yours makes a lasting (and positive) impression.

7. Simply put, attitude. It's attitude that makes the difference between a successful pitch and an ineffective one. It separates you from the rest of the pack, for better or for worse. Always be positive and upbeat with your customers, so they'll remember you as an individual who can adapt well to pretty much anything.

8. Take a look at your organizational skills. A good sales professional has to be organized, almost above all else. They know the importance of business planning, customer prospecting and target marketing. They also understand that organization is the foundation of a successful business, because they always manage to find the time to exceed their customers' expectations.

9. Never, I repeat never, stop learning. Focus on learning the tools to improve both yourself and your business. Reading books, researching the internet, networking are all tools that will help boost your bottom line. Attend training sessions, join professional and industry organizations, and get certified in subjects related to your work. The knowledge will come in handy, and you'll soon become recognized as a true sales professional.

10. Finally, set goals for yourself. Set them daily, weekly, or however often you need, and review them regularly to stay on track. Map out some realistic targets for yourself; the operative word in that sentence is "realistic" because regularly achieving goals you set for yourself creates a more positive state of mind, which in turn allows you to take your business to new levels.

These are only a few things to keep in mind when looking at yourself through your customers' eyes. Always remember to listen, communicate well and keep a positive attitude, and your company is far more likely to succeed than a business lacking any of these qualities.
