As a mom of four young children under eight, two with special needs, I understand how tough it can be to stay calm some days. But I've discovered ten things that have helped give me the relaxation, regeneration and recharge I need to be the best mom my kids deserve. Here they are, in no particular order:
Start and end the day with meditation. Five minutes is all it takes. Sit in a quiet place, clear all negative thoughts and renew your inner energy. In the morning it helps get you prepared to take on the challenges of the day. At the end of the day, it helps clear away the negative thoughts that could interfere with sleep.
Re-energize with midday exercise. Most people I know have a 'sleepy time' in the middle of the day somewhere. Instead of reaching for a cup of coffee or sugary treat, both of which can sending you crashing within a few hours, get some exercise. Go for a walk or jog, do a yoga practice, try some Pilates, anything goes really. As long as you're getting your heart beating a little faster and moving your muscles, it's a great pick-me-up.
You're so pretty. My grandmother used to tell me to do one thing each day that makes me feel pretty. Underneath the many titles we hold is 'woman' so be sure to do one thing during the day to remind you of your womanly beauty. Paint your finger or toe nails, put on your favorite lip gloss or mascara, take the time to do your hair or wear a pretty outfit. Feeling beautiful elicits confidence!
Take time for friends. Hanging out with friends is important for several reasons. As much as we love caring for our kids, it's good to engage in adult companionship and conversation once in awhile. Hanging out with your BFFs also keeps you close to that fun-loving, carefree side of yourself that your kids love so much. Plus, going out helps your kids know that Mama goes out too but always comes back and teaches you it's okay to have fun without the kids occasionally-something many of us Moms have difficulty with.
Steal time for you. We spend all day with little ones clinging to us, asking for things, talking endlessly and not even giving us the time to have a bathroom break on our own. Make sure to steal away a little time for yourself each day. That means if you have to get up early, put the household chores aside during the kids' naptime or taking a long, hot bath when your partner gets home, this time is vital for keeping stress in check.
Find a parent support group. Let's face it. Caring for young children can be tough, especially when your child has higher needs. Find a parent group near you or, if there isn't one, create one! This is a great way to connect with other parents as well as to give your kids a little play date. Plus you can take turns caring for each other's kids on your 'night out' or you'll have someone to turn to when you have appointments to and, most importantly, you'll always have a group who 'gets' what you're going through to turn to in times of distress.
Exercise your brain. Stop 'Mommy Brain' before it starts. The brain is an important muscle to work out every day too. Do a crossword puzzle, learn a new language, play games like Trivial Pursuit. Any brain exercises that get you thinking, tap into your memory or get you learning are very important in helping your intellectual side intact even if you spend the day engaging in baby talk!
Treat yourself. We give our kids a little treat every so often right? So you should give yourself the same indulgence. Have a small piece of chocolate or candy, make tiny versions of your favorite cake
Be creative. Do something each day that taps into your creative side. My 'thing' is music and writing. Yours might be art, sculpting, singing, dancing, acting, or another similar activity. Each of us is good at something creative or has the potential to be. Having a creative activity to turn to in times of stress help bring us back down, keep us grounded and provide a another positive way to channel negative emotions instead of acting out.
Sleep. This is probably the most important thing you do for your overall health. When you're sleep deprived, we don't have the same level of patience, concentration, motivation or tolerance. And it's easier to slip into depression when you're overtired. Make sure that you're getting enough sleep at night. Create a bedtime ritual that includes meditation, stretching, a warm drink (eg: tea or milk), cool comfortable sleeping environment and the same bedtime every night. And on nights where you don't get enough sleep, find a way to steal a nap during the day.
One other thing that's important to include every day is laughter. There's a reason they say it's the best medicine. Plus it can turn a stressful situation into fun. So, tell a joke, watch a funny show, tickle your little ones, make silly faces at each other or just listen to your kids' laugh.
These are all simple but vital activities to add to your lifestyle. Pick the ones that work for you or try a combination of different ones. No activity can reduce all stress from our lives. But activities such as these can help us handle the stressors life throws in our path in a healthier way. And that's good for everyone!
