Ten Things You Can Learn from One Tree Hill

Ashley Woods
"One Tree Hill," targeted at high school teens, has become one of the most talked about shows on the CW. The show contains humorous as well as moral issues teens deal with on a daily basis. There is much that can be learned from this show, of course, this is not an entirely serious tone.

High School Marriage can be Quite Rocky and Unstable

Nathan and Haley, otherwise known as Naley, the only teenage married couple in Tree Hill, have their bouts of ups and downs. Haley left to seek fortune and fame, or rather, Chris Keller. After she sorts through her mixed emotions for Chris as well as her dream of stardom, she decides to return to Nathan. To her surprise, but not ours, he is resentful and unwilling to jump back in with both feet. He rebels by going to a basketball camp, and as their relationship continues; one obstacle after another follows.

Fake IDs Are Easy to Come By

It seems that the main characters in Tree Hill, although in high school, has been spotted drinking in a bar or club. There is even a scene where Brooke makes fake ids to raise money as a gift for Nathan and Haley's wedding.

Friends with Benefits is Really Just a Figment of the Imagination

There are way too many emotions involved in intimacy to not become more than "just friends." Brooke and Felix discover this all too fast in their failed attempt at friends with benefits.

Emo-Punk-Goth Music is the Cure-All in Any Situation

Peyton's influence has every show title named after a band's song. She discovers new music every time she's depressed and locked in her room with her web cam, which is quite often. Her influence has affected all of Tree Hill with the opening of Tric; an all-ages live music club, and seems to unite all of the high school kids.

Basketball Is More Important Than Life Itself

How many times have Nathan and Lucas put their lives on the line in order to play the game they love? Too many times to count, if you ask me. Nathan overdoses on drugs and Lucas continues playing despite his heart condition; these two have proven that basketball is bigger than life.

Kissing Your Best Friend's Boyfriend Never Goes Over Well

Brooke was hurt and back stabbed by Lucas and Peyton's uncontrollable hormones, both times. The result led to torn friendships and three broken hearts.

Parents Suck at Parenting

Lucas's mom, Karen, is the only one with enough sense to stick around and raise him in a proper way. Brooke's parents, as well as Rachel's parents, don't even live in the same state. They send money regularly but forget birthdays. Haley's parents travel quite often in an RV, it's a wonder she turned out so well. Peyton's dad loves his work more than he loves her, or so it seems. Then there is Nathan, who seems to have it the worst, his mom is a pill-popper and his dad is a murderer.

After School Jobs Are Pointless If Your Parents Are Rich

Have you noticed that Haley is the only one who really works consistently? She even mentions that money has always been tight growing up when she marries Nathan. The others might work a dead end job here and there, but nothing is serious.

You Always Get Caught

It seems that everyone is able to discover secrets before they are confessed. Everyone has been caught doing the dirty, and secrets are spilled before the wrong can be righted. Some examples are: Rachel spies Brooke in an affair with a teacher. Lucas is caught kissing Peyton in the library by Haley. Dan had a witness to his murder of Keith who has been stalking him and leaving him messages. Deb is caught popping pills to drown her sorrows and is even caught sneaking out of rehab.

High School Chastity Group Members Are Not Always That Innocent

It's quite sad that the leader of Clean Teens was the one who Mouth lost his virginity to. Rachel eventually gets kicked out of the group for her provocative actions with the older, college boys. However, we all know she was never too serious about committing herself to the morals and values of the group. Lastly, Chase ends up sleeping with Brooke who was also a temporary member of Clean Teens. Could it be raging hormones, or perhaps, the high school youth is corrupted at its core?
