months of weekly, often times nightly games including pre season games. Then
there is the dreaded play off games and finally the super bowl. But here are a few tips to help you enjoy the time you spend with your guy as he watches the game.
Even though I grew up spending summers with my aunt, uncle, and two cousins, and went to races, and demolition derbies, I felt out of place when football came on. Even though I enjoyed watching the game, I felt out of place when calls were made or others began talking about what happened the next day because I had no clue what they were talking about.
But it wasn't until I got married and moved to Denver did I begin to really take a look at the game in a new way. I began to really study the flags, the teams, who the coaches were, as well as the penalties and rules. I'm still learning but the following is what I have discovered from the men in my family over the years.
1 The size of the screen with which you watch the games can be very important, especially when the super bowl is on. By the way the super bowl is an event all its own and should be deemed a national holiday in itself.
2. The snacks that are served. What's served and when. The favorite seems to be chips, dip hot wings and beer. (If you feel better take the keys or designate a driver)
3 Friendly bets and wagers that can be made. Now these can be chosen in various ways. Which team scores first? How many flags and penalties will be called for each team? What the score is at half time. And so forth.
4 Never interrupt your man with conversation during a game until commercial. Or pull him away from the game during meals or have him turn the TV off during the holidays. Best bet, set him up with a TV tray and join him in the living room if it's just the two of you.
5 Possibly schedule days out with your girlfriends if you really don't want to be in the house during the game. Those can be referred to as time for just me. If you like to shop, this is perfect; just make sure you have saved for it. This could benefit both you and your man.
6. Don't keep asking questions if they have to be asked wait till the commercials. Best way to learn is actually watch what's going on.
7 Read the sports page. Find out who did what and focus on the high lights. Be genuine when talking about it over breakfast or when ever you talk.
8 Don't plan get togethers during a game. Unless it is centered on the game.
9 If you think he's not seeing you in the same way, buy a jersey with his favorite team on it and wear it at night.
10 Learn the flags and penalties. I have listed some of the more common ones as I see them.
False start. That is when the other side that doesn't have the ball moves first making the side that has the ball think the quarter back has been passed the ball.
Face masking. That's where a member of the other team grabs the face mask of their opponent.
Roughing the kicker. Tackling the kicker on purpose after the ball has been kicked.
Roughing a passer, same as above except it is tackling the passer after the ball is thrown.
Unnecessary roughness - Assaulting a player after the whistle has been blown ending the play.
Holding. When a player grabs a part of the jersey and pulls preventing the player to make the tackle.
Chop block. When an offensive player stops other players below the waist and from behind.
Hope this helps ladies. Just remember football season isn't year around When that's over you have baseball, and basketball season to look forward too. Just have those jersey's ready.
