One of the best ways I've found to review what a self-help or inspirational book is going to cover is to skim read any quotes the author (or publisher) chooses to highlight. This can be an easy and enjoyable way to take a "snapshot" of the book's contents. If I don't like the quotes, I rarely bother with more in depth reading.
Here are ten quotes by John Ortberg from "The Life You Always Wanted", selected at random. Enjoy!
"I am in a state of dis-appointment. I am missing the life that I was appointed by God to live."
"Given the way we are prone to describe 'following Jesus,' it's a wonder anyone wants to do it at all."
"At its heart, solitude is primarily about not doing something."
"One reason why we fail to hear God speak is that we are not attentive. We suffer from what might be called 'spiritual mindlessness.'"
"Disciplined people can do the right thing at the right time in the right way for the right reason."
'We are not the passive victim of others' opinions. Their opinions are powerless until we validate them."
"When the heart is well-ordered, we are not only increasingly free of sin, but also increasingly free from the desire to sin."
"At the deepest level, pride is the choice to exclude both God and other people from their rightful place in our hearts."
"Spiritual discipline: Any activity that can help me gain power to live life as Jesus taught and modeled it."
"The ministry of bearing with one another is learning to hear God speak through difficult people."
