Ten Tips on How to Make Your Computer Child Friendly

Child-Proof Your Computer

Susan O.
Computers have become an integral part of our lives and small children have now become aware of how to use the computer. It is the duty of the parents to teach their children how to use the computer effectively. Here are some tips:

1. After purchasing a computer read the user manual, this will tell you how and where to set up your computer. Place the computer in a position where light correctly falls on the computer screen. Make sure your child's chair is the right height and place it the correct distance from the keyboard.

2. Adjust the controls on the computer so the screen is not too bright for your child. This will ensure that your child's eyes are protected.

3. Proper posture is important. Show your child the correct way to sit at a computer. Demonstrate to them the way to keep your hands in line with the keyboard. There are Internet sites that show you how to prevent injuries to muscles, bones and posture that can be caused by improper computer usage.

4. Research topics such as security measures and parental controls. Ensure that your child cannot view inappropriate websites by setting the parental controls. Check the history of websites visited to make sure your child is not visiting unwanted websites. Age-based Internet controls are available, check with your Internet provider or MSN premium to add one of these controls to your child's computer.

5. Purchase a suitable computer table and chair based on your child's height. Many companies offer adjustable chairs so that you may change the height. Always keep an eye on your child's posture.

6. Your browser settings are customizable and you should learn how to use this feature. Set the pages your child visits on the list of favorites, this can minimize the risk of them going to an inappropriate website on accident. You can set your child's school website as the home page on your computer; this will show that your focus is on learning.

7. Show your children it can be fun while also learning through instructional websites. An example is BBC History for kids.

8. While your child is on the computer spend time with them. This will give you the opportunity to help them find websites that you approve of and that they can learn from.

9. Show your child how to perform simple tasks like searching to complete a homework assignment or how to look up proper spelling websites, as well as sending an instant message or email message. Computers are not just for fun and games; show your child how to use the computer to learn.

10. Don't let your child use the computer for hours at a time. Instill in them a sense of discipline. Make sure that they follow the rules on computer usage that you set for them.

Computers can be learning tools if used correctly. As computer technology advances, so will your child's understanding. There are many useful tools available on the Internet; there are research sites for health, science, history nutrition and much more. Children can benefit from playing learning games such as mind puzzles, quizzes, and playing interactive games with other children in their age group. Computers can help to give your child a brighter future if they are used correctly and with parental guidance.

Great article. I would add that there are a number of software tools that will setup your browser and lock-down the computer for you. KidZui has been in the news a lot (although subscription-based). My software of choice is Peanut Butter PC. It can even turn your work computer into a Kid-friendly computer and back again, just by running the software.
