First of all, your pet on a leash when you are outdoors. This will help to ensure that your pet does not end up fighting with another animal, chasing after something and ending up lost or hit by a car, or eating or drinking anything that may make your pet sick. Too many pet owners, keeping their pet on a leash may seem cruel, but in fact, doing so is just keeping your pet safe.
Second, do what you can to keep your pet away from pools. Even if your pet is able to swim, he/she may not be able to get out of the pool, especially if the sides are high. Another danger with pets and pool is that your pet may decide to drink the water. His could cause your pet to become ill due to the chemicals that are in pools. If you feel it necessary to take your pet near a pool, keep you pet on a leash and within your sight at all times to keep it safe.
Third, when taking your pet on a boat with you, put a life preserver on your pet. You can buy specially made animal life preservers for this purpose. It is a good idea to keep your pet on a leash while on a boat to keep it from jumping into the water, but, whether or not you decide to use a leash, a life preserver will help keep your pet safe in the event that it does happen to go overboard.
Fourth, keep your pet off of grassy areas that have been fertilized. Even if it has been a while, there is a chance that the fertilizer can soak into your pet's body through its feet and cause serious illnesses or even death.
Fifth, do not allow your pet to eat grass or other plants unless you are certain that they are safe and not fertilized. There are many plants that are poisonous to animals if eaten. Some of these plants can cause serious illness or even death in very small amounts.
Sixth, be sure to have a collar and identification tag on your animal. The identification tag should include the animal's name, your address, and your phone number. This helps ensure that your pet can be safely returned to you if it does happen to get lost. Included on the collar should also be the recent tag that states that your pet is up to date on its shots.
Seventh, if you are a cat owner, it is best to keep your cat indoors unless it is on a leash and supervised by you. Cats that are allowed to roam outdoors freely are more likely to acquire a disease or become injured than a cat that is kept indoors.
Eighth, spay or neuter your pet to help prevent it from wanting to roam. When a pet is not spayed or neutered, it is much more likely to roam if given the opportunity, trying to find a mate.
Ninth, keep your pets shots up to date. There are many vaccines that animals need, just like humans, to help keep them safe from diseases. Keeping your pets shots up to date not only ensures the safety of your pet, it also protects those around the animal.
Tenth, take your pet to the vet regularly for check-ups, and whenever you think that your pet may be ill or injured. Pets cannot speak to us and let us know what id wrong, so we need to be aware of the animal's normal behavior so that it is easier to detect any possible problems. If there is a possible problem, the best action to take is to seek medical care.
Pets are very loyal companions who enjoy our company as much as we enjoy theirs. They depend on us to keep them safe and healthy. Following general safety tips will help to ensure that your pet lives a long, happy, and healthy life.
