Ten Tips to Prepare for Enrolling in Online College Classes

How to Get Ready for Online Education!

Michy Lynn
Several years ago, I enrolled in some online college courses to refresh my degree so I could seek admission to a law school. It had been years since I had attended a ground campus, and distance learning or online learning was very rare back in the day. Because of this, I wasn't sure what to expect when I enrolled in online college classes.

If you're curious about what it's like to enroll and participate in college classes, I've got ten good tips for you to think about before taking the plunge and enrolling and choosing your online courses and online degree plan.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes -- Prepare Your Schedule

While online classes offer flexibility in your schedule, you still do have to find time for your class work. When I was enrolled in online classes, because of the nature of the online environment and not having a 'classroom' to be in, I found I spent a lot more time working on class work than I might have in a campus environment. I had to schedule time so my family knew I was 'in class'.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes - Prepare Your Finances

If you qualify for financial aid, find out before you enroll for online classes. You might not get reimbursed if you apply for aid after enrolling. Also, you'll want to see what your out of pocket expenses are for the online college classes, so you can decide if you can afford the weekly or monthly payments the online college requests from you.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes - Check for Equipment

You will need a computer or regular and reliable access to a computer, as well as internet access and email in order to attend online classes. If you don't have access to a computer, online college courses might not work for you.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes - Get Your Books

Many online colleges require you to purchase books, either electronic versions of hard copy. If you are required to purchase books or course material, be sure you can afford to purchase the online college material before your online classes start and that you will receive the material before the classes start. Online classes move fast, so not having the proper books can really set you back.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes - Prepare Your Study Space

Being organized and prepared to work independently in your online study courses is important. Before you enroll in online classes, you should prepare your online class study area and equipment and have your filing and printing system and such set up and ready to go.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes - Choose a Major or Course Plan

What do you want to get out of college classes online? What are you interested in studying? You'll need to pick a course plan and/or declare a major before or when you enroll for online college classes, so it's important to know what course of study you're interested in pursuing.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes - Be Comfortable with Computers

If you're not comfortable with computer, an online college class might be tough for you. Everything you will do in an online class is, by nature of being an online class, well, is online. You need to know how to use email, web interfacing, how to upload and download files and programs, how to use basic computer programs, and understand where or how to look things up online when you don't know what to do. If you're not comfortable with computers, you might consider a ground campus computer basics course before pursuing online college classes.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes - Be Comfortable with the Internet

Everything for an online class is performed over the internet, so you need to understand the basics of browsing the web before enrolling in an online course or college and be sure to have reliable internet access.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes - Does Your Job Pay?

Many employers have tuition reimbursement for classes that will benefit you in your job. Before you enroll in online courses, you should check with your employer to see if they can assist with books and tuition for your online classes.

Before Enrolling in Online College Classes - Decide What You Want From Your Education

Online classes are essentially what you make of them. You will get more out of your online class education if you put more into it. It's important for you to decide what you want to get out of your college classes online and then put the effort and commitment into your online classes so you get out of it what you put into it.
