The first tip when it comes to repairing your fence is to make sure you have all safety materials at hand. Things such as working gloves, safety glasses, hard boots and also any other safety devices you will need are a must. Before you even can get started on repairing your fence, you must have all safety items that you think you will need to get the job done. You can go to the hardware store or home improvement store and tell them you are planning on repairing your fence and they should be able to tell you what safety equipment should be used.
You must also gather all materials you are going to need to repair your fence before you get started. Having your materials handy is a good way to ensure you will not have to stop the fence repair in the middle to run to the home improvement store because you forgot you needed this or that. If you are repairing your fence, there is a good chance you will know what you need to repair and what materials it is going to take to get it done. Make a list before you start of the materials you will need such as a fence post or paint and make sure to check everything off of it before you get started.
You will also need to make sure you have all the tools you are going to need to repair the fence before you get started. Tools such as a hammer, saw, paint brush, screwdriver and staples are just some of the tools you might need to repair your fence. Take a look at what repairs need to be made and then make sure you have the appropriate tools before you start the project. Gathering your tools before you start your fence repair will help you because you will then know if you need to go get something before you get involved in the job at hand. Being prepared and ready for your fence repair will ensure a smoother home improvement and less time doing the actual fence repair.
If you have a wood fence and horses, a simple repair to keep the wood intact is to use chicken wire. If you are trying to repair a wooden fence due to the horse chewing on the wooden fence posts, simply buy chicken wire and install on the side of the wooden fence. Installing chicken wire over the wooden fence is a very easy repair to damaged wooden fences and will end up saving you from having to keep repairing or replacing your existing wood fence.
If you have a fence post that is not sitting up straight an important tip to remember is to never force the post to be in the upright position. Forcing a fence post can be damaging to the fence itself and can actually undo the foundation that the fence post is in. If you have a slanted fence post then you should just replace the post itself because trying to force the post back to the normal position can damage the post and the rest of the fence as well as possibly endanger you in the process.
If you have a broken gate latch, there is a very easy way to repair this without spending the money getting a whole new latch system. All you need to do is nail two small boards on each side of the latch hole on the fence post. The latch will catch between the two boards and make a secure connection as it should and it is just as effective as the original latch. You do not need to even go out and buy the wood or boards for this repair because simple pieces you can find around your house or in your garage should do the trick.
If you have a wooden fence and have sections of it that are in bad shape then pry them out. Use a pry bar to get the bad sections of the wooden fence out and remove the nails from the fence post with the pry bar. You will not be able to salvage the wood or the nails once you use the pry bar to get rid of the bad section so plan on buying the amount of materials you just got rid of. Using a pry bar to get out the bad sections of a wood fence will save you time and money since you can just inspect the fence and get rid of what you think is bad or damaged beyond salvation.
You will also need to get some paint or stain for your fence repair project. If you had to replace sections of your fence or had to buy materials that might not be like your fence, the coloring and overall appearance might be affected. In order to hide the fact that you replaced some of your fence or indeed have repaired your fence with another type of fence, you will need to either paint it or stain it. Staining your fence is always a good idea to do after you replace your fence or repair it to ensure it will last. You can get stain or paint at your local home improvement store as well as a brush for about 30 dollars. Staining or painting your fence will ensure that the repairs you just made will last and will also hide those imperfections of the fence repair.
If you are repairing a wood fence, you might want to keep in mind that it might mean you need to install more wood. If you have a wood fence that has sections missing or areas that have become damaged, you will probably need to get new wood for this section. Go to the home improvement store and get more wood for your fence but also note the type of wood you already have. When installing new wood fence panels, you should get the same type of wood you already have that way it looks better and flows better. Note the type of wood and whether it was treated wood or not and then make sure if you can to buy the same exact wood at the home improvement store.
Lastly, when you are doing a fence repair make sure to give yourself plenty of time and space to complete your project. Do not start the fence repair in the middle of the afternoon or right before Christmas because these are just two bad decisions. If you are planning on repairing your fence, make sure you give yourself ample time during the day to at least get most of the work done. Sure it might take you two or three days to do your fence repairs, but by starting in the morning hours you will have more work time so you might get the repairs done in one day instead of three days. You also do not want to start your repairs right before Christmas, and what that means is give yourself the right weather conditions for the project. A lot of stains and other items you might need for your fence require a certain temperature outside or a certain weather condition to get the work done. Usually, the weather conditions call for a mild-temperature and no rain or snow. Plan your fence repair for the spring, summer or early fall to make sure the weather conditions and the daylight are just right to get the fence repair done.
