Ten Tips for Taking a Business Writing Course Online

Learn the Tools of the Trade in Ten Easy Steps

Alex P
Sure, taking a business writing course online means you don't have to go into those monotonous training sessions on the fourth floor of that apartment building thirty miles away. On the other hand, it also means that you don't get the same interaction and personable guidance that you may have expected. But you will get what you paid for: an in-depth class that will make you far more adept at your area of interest. This means that you'll have to do some extra work on your part to make sure you absorb all the knowledge as efficiently as you can. Here are the best ten ideas toward successfully completing a business writing course online:

Make a List of Notecards

In business writing, it's important that you learn the tools of the trade. Some of this can be as simple as knowing what words to use and what words not to use. For example, you don't want to be using the word "subordinates" or "people under me" because they have a negative connotation. Make a list of notecards to study from so that you don't make these mistakes.

Focus on the Session

All too often, when you're taking a course online, you can get easily distracted. Don't be distracted by the internet or by music; instead, make sure that the session is the primary thing on your screen at all times.

Get the Instructor's E-mail

Sometimes, there are questions that you have left unanswered throughout the session. For this reason, it's important you get the instructor's e-mail and forward them any questions that you had with the material.

Explore the Online Classroom

The buttons that are all over your screen are there for a reason. Even if you're instructor only makes you use half of them, take a few moments to explore the rest because they all serve a purpose: to help you.

Review Away From the Computer

When your instructor sends you material to study, don't do the studying right in front of the computer. For the vast majority of us, it's far too easy to get distracted. Rather, print out the material and review it in your bedroom or at a desk.

Review Multiple Times

My brother, when he took an online course in business writing, learned the hard way to review material multiple times. Initially, he reviewed it only once, but did not understand why he could not comprehend all the material. After guidance from his instructor advising him to re-read the material, he began to perform much better in the online session.

Participate

Probably the worst thing you can do, whether you're in an actual classroom or in an online session, is not be active. Participation, multiple studies prove, raises how much you learn with stunning results. So, don't sit idly and have the advisor do everything for you: be the first to ask and answer questions.

Read All the Files Available

All the files that your instructor sends you are sent for a reason. Don't skip out and only read the one that he or she asks you to read. Read all of the material to get the most out of your learning from your online classroom.

Manage Your Time Effectively

Reading the material for homework right before your online session is a bad idea. Instead, read the material the night before and do a quick review before your next online session. This way, you'll be far more prepared for class.

Help Out Others

Have you ever noticed that when you teach something else to another student, even if you're not amazingly proficient at it, it helps you learn more? The same is true for an online business writing course session. Answer other students' questions and you'll quickly find holes in your knowledge that you can forward to the instructor right away.
