Ten Tips for Traveling by Plane While Pregnant

Emylou
I was six months into my pregnancy and living in Kenya, East Africa. Suddenly, we decided it was time we moved back to the States to be closer to family. I was concerned and a little stressed. But, it was also a learning experience not only for me but for my husband as well. From personal experience, here are ten tips to traveling by plane while pregnant:

Preparing for the trip:

(1) Consult your doctor and medical insurance. Talk to your doctor about the stage of your pregnancy and any medical problem you may have. Ask about any tests or medical appointments you need to have before or after your trip. Ask your doctor about vaccines you may be required to have. Find out if your insurance covers delivery and medical complications during travel.

(2) Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes and shoes for your flight. Some women experience circulation problems during pregnancy. The right clothes and shoes can make a difference when traveling while pregnant.

Booking the ticket:

(3) Before you book your ticket, find out the flight restrictions for your airline. Restrictions vary on whether you will be flying internationally or domestically. Most airlines do not allow women who are eight months pregnant to fly. I was required to have a letter from my doctor saying it was safe for me to fly.

(4) If you have a flight layover, make sure you have plenty of time before your next flight boards. When we were traveling, my husband and I had a three hour lay over in London. We thought it was enough time, but it was not. The lines to the Xray machines were long and I had to rush to the gate while my husband put our bags through the Xray machines. We made it on the plane with just a few minutes to spare.

(5) Get a comfortable seat, as far forward on the aircraft as possible. The air circulation is usually better towards the front of the plane. Get an aisle seat close to the restroom.

(6) If you have need a special meal, let your travel agent know.

During the flight:

(7) Drink and eat enough. The humidity in planes is only seven percent. The dry air is uncomfortable and can cause dehydration. Drink as much as possible. Eat before, after and during your flight.

(8) Get some exercise. Walking and stretching exercises can aid in keeping the blood flowing during a flight.

(9) Rest. Avoid tiring yourself out by getting enough sleep before and during the flight.

(10) Do not be afraid to ask for help. While we were traveling, my husband was a big help. He helped make traveling by air while pregnant more comfortable and exciting.
