A good hammer should always be around the house. These can be purchased a a dollar store and virtually any retailer such as Wal Mart. Expect to spend about $15, possibly less.
Screwdrivers are another great hand tool to have lying around. A set is best, and can be purchased for as cheap as $5 at some locations. Handyman or not, screwdrivers are one of the most commonly used tools around the house.
An adjustable wrench is also great for several things. These too can usually be purchased relatively cheap. A brand name pair isn't necessary and they are highly available.
Hand sanders have all sorts of household used, even for those who typically don't use tools. These can also be bought at several different local retailers. However, it is not necessary to spend over $20 on this particular hand tool.
Wire cutters may not seem very useful but its a good idea to have them anyway. Although rarely used around my house, they have came in really handy a few times. Prices will vary by the brand.
Ratchets are not only used for cars. You can get a cheap set just about anywhere. They come in different sizes, so it's recommended buying the whole set.
Invest in a cordless drill. These are somewhat pricey compared to the other tools mentioned, but the cost is well worth it. Expect to pay anywhere from $40 to $200.
A carpenters knife commonly referred to as a box cutter, should always be in your home tool kit. Box cutters serve a variety of purposes and don't cost a lot of money. You really don't need to spend over $10 for this tool.
A metal square can become essential for several projects. You can spend a little or a lot on the square. However, most are durable regardless of cost and brand.
Some may not classify this as a tool, but a hot glue gun should be in everyone's tool box. You would be surprised how often you may actually use it. . A hot glue gun can be purchased usually for right around $20.
There are just a few of the hand tools that are great to have lying around the house. The amount of money you choose to spend on these items should depend on how often you use them and your level of expertise.
