A curious traveling charity road runner will want to know more when learning than there's actually an event known as the Ten Ugly Men 5K in Rochester, N.Y.

Ten Ugly Men is a non-for-profit organization comprised of real estate developer, lawyers, bankers, college professors and entrepreneurs in the Rochester area with the stated goal "to host great parties and donate the proceeds to local charities.

Ten Ugly Men is approaching its 21st anniversary with 16 members listed: Michael Hartman, Mark Palvino, John Fitzsimmons, Michael Perrotta, Alan Wood, Larry Casey, Brad Quigley, Mike Geisler, Dwight Barksdale, Alan Lagonegro, Kerry Gotham, Jimmy Schultteis, Francis Donald, Keelin Brennan, Sarah Sturm, and Rosie Simiele. Clearly, as Sarah and Rosie demonstrate, you don't have to be ugly to join and you don't even have to be a man.

Ten Ugly Men hosts more than just a charity road race. Among other summer events are tournaments featuring kickball, dodgeball, bocce, and a sport known as "KamJam" which involves throwing a Frisbee-type disc into a goal.

This year's Ten Ugly Men 5 K starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 24, at Rochester's Genesee Valley Park. The entry fee is a modest $18 and for $5, kids 13 and younger can run in a 1K event just for them.

Benefiting charities are the St. Mary's Oncology Center, the Bright Eyes Fund for pediatric brain tumor treatment at Golisano Children's Hospital, Wilson Commencement Park and the Rochester Boys and Girls Club.

Entrants in the Ten Ugly Men 5K who defeat the Ten Ugly Men team will receive fee admission valued at $40 to the Ten Ugly Men Festival on the weekend of Aug. 13 and 15. Age division winning will receive a $100 ticket to the festival's Ten Ugly Men VIP area. Wait a minute: Shouldn't that be the "VUP area?" We all know what the "U" stands for, don't we?

In all seriousness, consider that Ten Ugly Men has raised $1.1 million to date for worthy causes, and last year's efforts peaked at $200,000. They're looking pretty good!
