In recent years we have seen the sports records, once thought untouchable, fall to the side. But even with the advancement in sports medicine and training, there are still several sports records that are going to remain unbreakable for some time to come.
Unbreakable NFL Records
Most Sacks in a Game
Derrick Thomas set the record of 7 sacks in a game in 1990 as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. Even more surprising was that the Chiefs lost when Thomas missed notching his eighth sack and Dave Krieg threw the winning touchdown. While sacks have become more common place, there is little chance of seeing this happen again.
Most Interceptions in a Season
The year was 1952 when Night Train Lane set this record as a member of the Los Angeles Rams. Lane recorded 14 interceptions during the 12 game schedule. Even with the current 16 game schedule, no one has come close to breaking in. In fact, the last time someone came close was in 1980 when Lester Hayes hauled in 13 interceptions.
Most Receiving Yards in a Career
In our lifetime, we have seen the NFL''s greatest wide receiver, Jerry Rice, make his mark on the game. Despite all of the records he has set, the 22,895 career receiving yards is one that we will not see broken in our lifetime. The second person on the career receiving yards list is Terrell Owens, who is about 7,000 yards shy.
Most Consecutive Super Bowl Losses
The Buffalo Bills will always be remembered for one thing first, losing in four straight Super Bowl appearances. After the heart wrenching loss to the New York Giants, the Bills never seemed to destined to win. Even though the record is based on losses, it is still impressive how the Bills were able to return each year for another attempt.
Unbreakable MLB Records
Career Hits
It took Pete Rose 22 seasons in the major leagues to break the Career Hit record that had previously been owned by Ty Cobb. By the time he was done playing baseball, Rose had amassed 4,256 hits. Even with advances in modern technology do not expect this record to be broken in our life time.
Consecutive Games Hitting Streak
The year was 1941 when Joe DiMaggio set this unbreakable record by hitting safely in 56 consecutive games. Some have come close, like Pete Rose who was n 1978 to breaking the record, but fell short when it ended at 44 games.
Career Wins
If there is one record you have to pick from the list as being completely untouchable, it would be the 511 career wins set by Cy Young. Based on the dynamics of the game today, with pitchers being held to pitch counts or managers relying on their bullpens, you will never see a pitcher be able to amass this number of wins in their career unless they play for 30 years.
Unbreakable NHL Records
Most Goals in a Season
The Great One, Wayne Gretzy, set this unbreakable record when he scored a staggering 92 goals with the Edmonton Oilers during the 1981-82 season. The closest someone has come in recent years was Alex Ovechkin who recorded 65 goals a few years ago Ironically Gretzy owns the second place spot with his 87 goal performance during the 1983-84 season.
Unbreakable NBA Records
Most Points in a game
In 1962, it only took the great Wilt Chamberlain one game to rack up enough points to win the game by himself. The 100 points he scored against the New York Knicks accounted for almost 60 percent of the team's total. The Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant came close in 2006 when he notched 81 points.
Unbreakable Cycling Records
Most Consecutive Tour de France Wins
In 1999, Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France and began a trek where the world would watch him win six more. He was able to accomplish this despite his battle with cancer. While questions of doping have begun to linger, you can expect the record to remain for a lifetime or until hard evidence is discovered.
