Americans do not need to travel far if they are looking for unique foods to taste. Here are ten unique foods in the United States everyone must try.

Cactus Fries

A unique food has taken hold in the southwest corner of the United States that put a spin on an old favorite. Cactus fries are cooked pieces of cactus that have been sliced and covered with a flour-cornstarch mixture before being deep fried. If you are a fan of French fries, these are sure to be a welcomed change of pace that you will enjoy.

Rocky Mountain Oysters

Sometimes referred to as prairie oysters, the only thing they have in common with the shellfish is that they share the same name. Popular in the Midwest, this unique food is bull testicles which have been peeled and usually deep fried. While it may make you squirm in your seat at the thought, people swear by them once they try them.

Burgoo

While this spicy stew may have its roots from an Irish stew, those who made it in the Southern states made it unique to American culture. When it came to adding meat to the stew, they used whatever there was abundance of, like squirrel, venison, or other small game. While there is no standard recipe, this dish has been a mainstay at small diners throughout the Southern states.

Scrapple

This meat dish is the combination of the mush of pork scraps and trimmings mixed with cornmeal and flour to create a solid congealed loaf of meat. This unique food made its home in Pennsylvania and has been a mainstay on the menu of local restaurants. While it may not sound appealing at the start, the texture and taste will make it the perfect compliment to your breakfast meal.

Turducken

Tired of debating whether you should have ham or turkey during the holiday dinners? Why not try a turducken? This unique American food was first concocted in the mid 1980's is the perfect melding of turkey, duck, and chicken. This dish is created when a de-boned chicken is stuffed inside a de-boned duck before it finally ends up inside a de-boned turkey.

Geoduck

When it comes to shell fish, clams and oysters tend to be the most popular. But there is one, the Geoduck, which has been gaining in popularity since the mid 1999's. Sometimes referred to as the Gooey Duck, this unique food has found its home in recipes. Whether fried or served in chowder, the unique delicate flavor is sure to bring you back for more.

Spam

Prior to the invention of e-mail, Spam had a whole other meaning. This product of the Hormel company has been a mainstay in American culture and has been around since 1937. Though the precooked can meat may not look appealing when it slides out of the can with a plop, it only takes one meal to develop a taste for it.

Fried Dill Pickles

This popular snack in the southern parts of the United States has begun to grow in popularity thanks to the appearance of it at fairs across the country. The combination of deep frying with the saltiness of the pickle makes it a treat like none other.

Rattlesnake

This unique food offers a flavor combination of seafood with small game. While this delicacy has been a favorite of those living in the southwest, it has begun to attract more food enthusiasts with its variety of recipes, from chili to pasta dishes.

Crayfish

Largely popular in the southern states along the Gulf coast, crayfish are a smaller freshwater version of the lobster. Rooted deep in southern tradition, the preferred method of eating is to tear off the head and suck the meat out, the meat can be used in chowders or etouffees.

    Fun article. I've had frickles, which are great... and would definitely want to try out those cactus fries.
