Ten Steps to Better Grades for Your Child

It all starts around age five. Your little one gets on that big yellow school bus and begins their school career. The first day of school is the first day of the rest of your child's life. Education is very important. The better your child does in school the better he or she will be likely to do in life. It's not just about the grades though. A child must have a good understanding of what they are learning to succeed.

As parents we want our children to do well in school. Did you know that there are many things that parents can do to boost their children's understanding levels, and grades? There are. Here are ten tips on helping your child to get better grades in school. These tips will ensure your child has a good understanding on the material being taught and therefore will improve their grades.

1. The first thing that you can do to help your child get better grades is to know what is being taught to them. What expectations does the teacher have for your child? What material are they covering in class each day? What does your child have to accomplish by the end of the marking period, or by the end of the year? Knowing these things is the first thing you can do to help your child.

2. The second thing that you can do to help your child get better grades in school is to communicate with their teacher. Call him or her up any time! Teachers are generally wonderful and quite friendly. Teachers also love it when parents care enough to get involved. Each classroom is different. Specific teachers teach specific things a specific way. Maybe you've had a child in that grade previously but that doesn't mean that your child is currently being taught the same things the same way. It's important for parents to know how the teachers are teaching the material, as well as what material is being taught.

3. The third thing you can do to help your child get better grades in school is to attend parent and teacher conferences. At these meeting you can hear from the teacher exactly how your child is doing and exactly what areas need extra help and support. Many times parent/teacher conferences are optional. They should be taken advantage of!

4. The fourth thing that you can do to help improve your child's grades is to carefully read all of the papers that come home. Whether they be class work, or notes from the school, it is very important to stay informed and involved. When you read through the papers that come home each day you will have the opportunity to see for yourself how your child is doing on what. If you see a math sheet with several wrong and corrected then you know to give extra support in math, for example.'

5. The fifth thing you can do to help your child get better grades is to take the class work that comes home and go over it with your child. Show them how to improve in the areas they're having trouble in. Take the time to sit down with your child and go over any questions or problems that they missed on the papers they've brought home. They obviously didn't understand it, and just because the teacher corrected it doesn't mean it was gone over with your child.

6. The sixth thing that you can do to help your child improve their grades is to make sure that they are doing their homework. It is a parents responsibility to make sure that home work is done, and sent back to school, in the first years. After fourth and fifth grade your child should be encouraged to be responsible for starting and finishing their homework, and making sure it is turned in on time. They will still need reminders though. Homework is a portion of your child's overall grade. Help them when they need help.

7. The seventh thing you can do to help your child improve their grades in school is to set up a study area. This could be a small room with a desk or table in it. A quiet place where your child can think, study, and work. There should be minimal distractions while your child is trying to concentrate. The quality of their work and the understanding they gain both increase when they are able to focus. This room should also contain books, supplies, etc.

8. The eighth thing you can do to help your child get better grades is to set up a routine. A homework time, and a separate study time. When there is a routine there is no slacking off, or forgetting. It is expected, it is daily. Each day your child needs to do these things. The consistency of it being daily will help wonders at improving your child's grades. This also eliminates problems with getting your child to do what they need to do. It's not an option, it's a routine.

9. The ninth thing you can do to help improve your child's grades is to use math flashcards. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, counting currency, and time flashcards are all available at most dollars or department stores. Make flashcard use part of your child's daily study routine. These improve their skills which in turn improve your child's grades.

10. The tenth thing that you can do to help your child do better in school is to read both to and with them. Take turns telling the story. Read page for page, or simple ask your child to read you a book. The reading skill is by far on of the most important skills your child could improve. It is needed in all areas of study. If you can read with your child to strengthen this skill you will see an improvement in all areas. Thanks for reading and take care!
