Buying gas for your vehicle is one of those things you just can't get around. It is a monthly "bill" that is pretty much set in stone. You can't put it off or decide to just "not pay it". I guess you could decide that, but you wouldn't get very far, literally.
You can start saving on gas by checking the air pressure in your tires. I know, sounds weird, but it is true. I remember my Dad telling me this when I first started driving. When the air pressure isn't where it should be it can cost you a few miles per gallon in gas. You can get a tire air pressure gauge for very little money and carry it in your vehicle and routinely check your tire pressure.
The second way you can save on gas is to turn off the motor instead of leaving it running. This could be at the post office or ball park waiting for your baseball player to be done with practice. Yeah, I know it may be hot but I suggest to turn off the motor and get out of the vehicle. Make a decision to save gas rather than stay inside the vehicle and be cool. Your wallet will thank you!
Thirdly, maintain your vehicle. Along the same lines as checking tire pressure you also need to keep your oil changed regularly and get tires rotated periodically. A simple tune up could make all the difference. If your vehicle is not running smoothly it could cost you, in more ways than one.
Fourthly, only use the air conditioning when you have too. I know, I know, another crazy idea. Especially when you live in the Texas heat. But, when you can, roll the windows down and enjoy the fresh air. I remember riding around with someone and when the gas tank got low they would always turn off the air conditioner saying it would not use as much gas. This idea may not work for you, depending on where you live, but when you can, try it.
The fifth way you can save on gas is to slow down! You don't have to drive 75 mph even though you can. Slowing down a bit will save you some gas.
Sixth, okay I know this next one may not be too feasible but it is an option. Look into buying an electric car. Might be expensive at first to just buy the car, but could save you money you would normally be spending on gas in the long run.
The seventh way to save on gas is to get rid of the junk in the trunk. The more stuff you have in your trunk the more weighted down your vehicle is thus using more gas to get the car moving. So, take a look in your trunk and clean it out.
Another way to save on gas is to carpool when you can. If you know someone who takes the same route as you at the same time as you see about taking turns.
The ninth way to save on gas is to try alternate routes. I know for me I have the option of going through town which means a lot of stopping at red lights and having to slow down and speed up. But, if I take another highway instead I can go a steady 60 mph and avoid all of that stopping and starting .
The tenth way to save on a gas: get a bicycle! Seriously, if you live in town and don't have to drive miles and miles each day to work then getting a bicycle could be the perfect plan for you. Use your car only when you need too.
Some of these ideas may not work for you and all of them may work. Just take what will work for you and start implementing it today and start saving gas today!
