1. Animal penis and testicles
There is actually a restaurant in Beijing dedicated to cooking and serving up meals containing animal testicles, and animal penises. Delicacies include Yak, Oxen, donkey, and even seal penises. A particular favorite is goat penis, cut into piece, fried, dipped in flour, and served kebab style on a skewer. The hotpot gives a taste of the various delicacies by offering six different types of penis, four types of testicles, all boiled in chicken stock. Canadian seal penis has to be ordered in advance and can cost up to the equivalent of $440. The Chinese believe that there are certain health benefits to eating these types of foods.
2. Monkey Brain
Mostly this is a Chinese delicacy, but it can be found served in other countries around the world. It is believed that eating monkey brain can cure impotence. The Anyang tribe of Cameroon had a tradition where the new chief of the tribe would have to eat monkey brain. Someone else in the tribe would eat the heart. There are large quantities of fat in animal brains, and certain diseases can be passed on to humans and animals who eat monkey brains.
3. Grasshoppers
These insects are generally parboiled then sauteed. These were once, and possibly still are a protein packed delicacy in Mexico. Some of the grasshoppers have a lot of meat on them too. There are also other bugs and larvae favored as foods, such as certain beetles, grubs, worms, and a whole lot more.
4. Blood Sausage
This is made of blood, fat, and offal. This actually sounds worse than what it tastes like. It is good fried and eaten with eggs. For some people though, the thought of eating a food with blood as an ingredient is a pretty gross idea.
5. Rat
I'm sure rat is eaten in other parts of the world, but Thailand is the country I have most heard of eating this rodent. The whole rat is cooked over an open fire, then placed in a bowl of really hot chili. Tribal villager's hunt down the rats, which they find to be a quality meal.
6. Pork Brains
These are very popular in the Southern United States. They come in a can with milk gravy, and can be purchased in many grocery stores. Traditional they served on top of scrambled eggs. A good food for some, but it must be said they are an acquired taste.
7. Tree Fungus
Yes, people actually eat tree fungus. It is a popular dish served in some Saigon Vietnamese Restaurants. It is usually served with a spicy red pepper sauce. It does not sound like an appetizing food to eat, but it is said to be very tasty.
8. Hermaphrodite Frog Guts
A more accurate description is frogs fallopian tubes. These are eaten as a delicacy in China. They are not really popular for their taste, but for the texture, and health quality factors. They are also an expensive delicacy, so people can show off in restaurants when they buy this dish as only the rich can afford them. Imagine eating frogs sexual organs for lunch, wouldn't that be something to tell your friends?
9. Frogs Legs
These are a well known french delicacy. They are prepared in butter, garlic and parsley sauce, and served with salad, or rice. Frogs are also hunted in the United States, and served with egg\cracker crumb breading. In China they are stir fried, stewed, fried, or made into the traditional Cantonese dish that is named Congee.
10. Biltong
This is a South African name for animals that get cut into strips, and hung out to dry. Cattle or wild animals, such as Elephant, Springbok, and Eland are hung out to dry and then eaten.

Post a CommentI can comment only on the one on the list I have actually eaten: biltong. Biltong ROCKS!!! Waaaay better than beef jerky! I thought it was disgusting, too, before I tried it. But I think droewors (dried sausage) is gross. It's greasy and looks like . . . well, never mind.
I also had fish biltong once--okay, now THAT was nasty! :P
I don't know why tree fungus would necessarily be bad. Mushrooms are fungus and a lot of people like them.
Great article! LOL. According to my boss, if we knew what they put in hot dogs we'd never eat them either. He says pig farmers have a saying - we use everything but the squeal!
These are really yucky, alright (and no, I haven't tried them all. Lets just say I had a few "run-ins" with some of them). Might want to check out the Phillipine delicacy called 'baloot'. Its a chicken or duck egg that is underdeveloped and buried for a few days. Then you crack a hole in eat end and suck out the innards. Not a tasty treat I'd recommend twice. Fun article. Brought back some intriguing memories.
Oh my, these certainly sound like the 10 worst foods! I will just have to take you at your word though b/c I'm not going to eat them. LOL
People eat this stuff? You have totally grossed me out - I'm glad I already ate my supper before I read this. Good article by the way.
