Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny

Tenacious or Ridiculous?

Eric Thomas
If you're like me, you've been a Tenacious D fan since early on when they had their own HBO show. You've followed "The D" and went and saw all of Jack Black's movies and maybe even hit a few of their shows. So naturally, the announcement of this film was exciting as well as interesting. You saw the trailer on some website and thought it looked sort of corny, but funny at the same time. Well, my friends, it's both!

The beginning starts with what is supposed to be a young J.B., probably about 9 or 10 years old. He has this major blowout with his old man (who happens to be Meatloaf) and ends up leaving the house. That's the short version. There's actually a really hilarious song that is played over the disagreement and Jack summons the help of Ronny James Dio to ask for his advice. Anyway, fast-forward a bit and now Jack is all grown up living in another state, Hollywood, California to be exact. He hooks up with Kyle, who is posing as a street performer that can really shred on the acoustic guitar. J.B. is really impressed by this and wants to join him to have Kyle teach him his ways. Did I mention that K.G. has a full head of long flowing hair, sort of like Fabio?

So, Kyle takes him in and begins to teach Jack how to rock. Kyle apparently never pays his rent and is living off money from his mother. Jack finds this out and they have a big fight in which Kyle's wig gets pulled off on accident, then all bets are off! They decide to form a band and are looking for different places to play and earn some money.

So where does this "Pick" come in? Ben Stiller has a cameo in the flick where he works as a guitar tech at a music shop. He tells the two about the pick and what legends once had possession of it, like Eddie Van Halen. They then find out that the "Pick of Destiny" is in the Rock Museum and is heavily guarded. You know what's coming next, right?

Yep, you guessed it. They decide that their mission from there on out is to get the pick and use it to record an instant classic! They meet a few people along the way and have some strange encounters, but that's the gist of the storyline.

Personally, I liked the movie and thought it was hilarious. But, I really think it was due to the fact that I wasn't expecting much. If you are not really into Tenacious D, then there is a good chance you will think it's stupid. Jack is his usual, animated, hilarious self. Kyle has those classic comments that he just drops out of nowhere. The storyline is lacking, but The D makes up for it. If you're a fan, go see it. If not, you might want to just rent this one!
