A Review of the Film "Tenacious D In: The Pick of Destiny"
December 2, 2006 - "Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny" stars Jack Black ("Nacho Libre") and Kyle Gass ("Elf"), and includes cameos by Ronnie James Dio of Black Sabbath as himself, Ben Stiller ("Along Came Polly") as Guitar Store Guy, Tim Robbins ("Catch a Fire") as The Stranger, Colin Hanks ("Orange County") as Drunk Frat Dude, Amy Adams ("Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby") as Gorgeous Woman, Meat Loaf ("Fight Club") as Jack's Father, Fred Armisen ("Saturday Night Live") as Security Guard #2, David Krumholtz ("Bobby") as Frat Boy 2, Amy Poehler ("Saturday Night Live") as Truck Stop Waitress, David Koechner ("Let's Go to Prison") as Surplus Store Clerk, with John C. Reilly ("Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby") as Sasquatch and Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana fame as Satan. It's "Superman" meets "Spider-Man" meets "This Is Spinal Tap". Or to put it in even simpler terms, "Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny" is the origin story of the greatest band in the history of time.
If "School of Rock" had a black sheep of an older brother, his name would be "Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny". Which basically means, if you love Jack Black, you'll love this movie, but if you don't, you probably won't, or, at least, you'll find it to be more than a bit odd, with humor that's hit or miss at best. Bottom line, after the lackluster "Nacho Libre", Jack's back schooling us on how to rock hard in "Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny".
