Fisher began his football career on the field. As a USC Trojan he played defense along side some of the greatest players in the game like Ronnie Lott, Joey Bronwer and Bruce Matthews. Fisher would play in the NFL with the Chicago Bears for several years before ending his career after a leg injury. He would soon move into coaching where he would continue to thrive.
After working as a defensive coach with Philadelphia for several years, Fisher got his first head coaching job with the Houston Oilers. He was originally hired to temporarily replace fired coach Jack Pardee. Fisher would be asked to return as head coach. He would lead the team to two .500 seasons making a good impression on owner Bud Adams. His success was partly because of two great pickups in the draft. Quarterback Steve McNair and running back Eddie George. The Titans would soon move to Tennessee in order to find a new home.
Fisher's greatest accomplishment as a head coach came during the 1999 season. Proving his doubters wrong the Titans went 13-3 and would go deep into the playoffs this year. Their playoff run was famous for the 'Music City Miracle,' a miracle kickoff return that won their playoff game against the Bills. The team would make it all the way to the Super Bowl. The team unfortunately fell just a little short as Kevin Dyson was one yard short of the end zone at the end of the game. The Titans would lose the game 23-16.
Times would not always be great for the Titans. The team would have some tough years after their Super Bowl run. A few losing season would have many fans questioning Fisher's conservative play calling and ball control offense. 2006 however saw an improvement with the arrival of Vince Young. Young led the Titans to an 8-8 season and one game away from the playoffs. With an early 4-2 start this season, Fisher is well on his way to getting the Titans back to the playoffs.
Jeff Fisher has proven his abilities as a head coach. He has brought the Titans back to being one of the elite teams in NFL. With his star quarterback Vince Young, look for Fisher to make another great run at winning a Super Bowl. Such a victory would certainly lock his position in the Hall of Fame.
