Tennessee Vs. Auburn 2008

Battle of the Defense

I'm sure everyone would agree the Tennessee Volunteers are off to a "rocky" start this year, and Saturday's 12-14 loss against Auburn was more of the same. Some hopefuls saw this game as a chance for the Vols to bounce back from a disappointing 30-6 loss to Florida. We bounced about as well as a lead ball.

No question about it, the game came down to the offense...or lack thereof. Auburn's coaches looked like they were busy doing the "Hokey Pokey," while Phil Fulmer flipped through his copy of "The Complete Idiots Guide to Coaching College Football." Maybe we should attempt the "Hokey Pokey" method. What do we have to lose really?

There was very little offense from either team, and Auburn's defense doubled their score with a touchdown after Tennessee's offense dropped the ball...literally. Someone please inform Arian Foster that dribbling is only acceptable in basketball. Maybe Fulmer was busy getting a massage and couldn't be bothered by something as complex as actually doing his job. He must have taken a break from reading "the idiot's guide" long enough to say 'go for it' on 4th and 4. Really? I'm not even sure we could have gotten 4th and inches with our offense.

There are pretty much two schools of thought on Tennessee's lack of victory this year. 1) Lack of talent and 2) lack of coaching. I tend to agree with the latter, but Volunteer legend, Peyton Manning, was quick to offer words of support for his former coach, saying that Fulmer knows how to get the vols out of tough situations. If Fulmer really knows how to get us out of this slump, he's giving us no indication. As for talent, Manning assures Vols fans that we have more than enough to take back the SEC. Why, then, are we the caboose on this SEC train? Earlier this week Fulmer declared that they "didn't all of a sudden get stupid as coaches." Many Vols fans would agree that Fulmer's stupidity is less of a sneak attack and more like a rampid disease. Spreading thoughout the Vols sideline and reaching out onto the field.

As disappointed Vols fans exited Jordan-Hare stadium in Auburn, "Rocky Top" could be heard in the background. Was this jubilant celebration in honor of the fact that we only lost by two points instead of 24, or could it be that the Pride of the Southland somehow missed the fact that we lost. Either way, there is very little cause for rejoicing up on ole rocky top as we are now 0-2 in the SEC.

The silver lining to our dark cloud was Florida's loss to Ole Miss...ah, sweet vindication.
