Terraria: A Competiting Spin-off Minecraft Tips Its' Hat To!
A 2D Adventure Game that is in Constant Updates with Many Craftable Items and Monsters
Terraria came out in early 2011 and has been popularly described as a 2D version of Minecraft. Both games hold many similar aspects which could cause this misconception.
A game made by only 4 differernt people, Terraria popped up almost as quickly as it's Herobrine, Minecraft. Selling on steam, it has skyrocketed in criticism and praise. The game itself has already added over about 100 new items, enemies, and armor within the two weeks that I've owned it. Not to mention the multiplayer is very beautiful.
Recently the creators have expanded from an 8 player coop or competitive multiplayer to a cap of 255 players per map.
Now why this may sound expansive, and for the most part it is when you consider grievers, the gaming world gives you the ability to choose between a small, medium, or large world. It also let's you play on any server with your character as long as it isn't restricted, and it let's you store items in your "piggy bank" that only you can see which prevents thieves.
Terraria really shines in the fact that it has boss fights, underground jungles, places in which are "Corrupted", and it seamlessly goes from underground to it's own form of "Hell." On top of that (no pun intended) the game also has floating islands which can be reached in a multitude of ways such as climbing, creating staircases, or using your grappling hook once you get close enough.
Now granted, I haven't been playing the game long, but the addiction is where it is. Just as a person who first starts their Minecraft adventure, you feel lonely at first with only a mere Tutorial NPC to talk to. You need to build a shelter to protect yourself from the evils at night, and to help you survive your adventure whether it be to the underworld or the realms up high.
Although it borrows many aspects of gameplay from the aforementioned game, the two separate by far in quality and quantity. Mojang tends to focus Minecraft on updates that have become less sporadic and fix the bugs that have been introduced in such an unlimited 3D game with limited content updates. Terraria on the other hand tends to pour out updates with tons of content and graphic changes. Now this is not a bad thing against Mojang. Terraria has an easier ability to fix issues with a 2D game, especially graphic wise, in a timely manner. Programming on a 3D game that has the same unlimited potential tends to be more time consuming. So I say congratulations to BOTH games for their outstanding premise and out-of-the-box style.
There is something about Terraria that takes you back to those good ole' SNES days. The music, the visuals, the magic, and the combat. Those are just a few things. If you were to ask me about what the best part of it is though, I would have to say the connection you get by playing cooperatively with just a FEW friends. This can take the game to a whole completely new level! Before you know it 3 AM has passed and you need to get up at 6 to make it to work. That's the kind of game... Nye, GAMES, that both mentioned virtual immersion realities have become!
So I ask of you to at least watch a video on it. Many horrible things have been commented about the game, but so the same fate has fallen to the so called 3D version of it. You find the bad, you find the good, but in the end everyone has their own opinion. If this sounds like a game you might like, I suggest giving it a go!
