Terror in America

Shirley Norling
She was doing what she believed in
In that grocery store parking lot
She only wanted her voice to be heard
She was representing the people of America

Without any notice whatsoever
Gunshots rang out in Tucson
Innocent lives changed forever
Representing America suddenly became violent

One little victim was born on 9/11
She came into the world
On a day of unspeakable terror
She left it without much change

Hatred, violence, terrorism
It's consuming our lives
Schools, churches, parking lots
Is any place safe

If we don't agree
Can't we take another route
Or is this what
America has become

Is it time to become more aware
Of the words we speak
Internet postings we make
And some of the actions we take

For we know not when
A disgruntled individual
May totally misinterpret
An innocent voice

We shouldn't have to fear
Every action we take
Every move we make
That's not the freedom we knew

If the day should come again
When we can all feel safe at Safeway
When we are no longer fearful
Of expressing our personal viewpoint

That will be the day
For Americans everywhere
To say "rejoice and be glad"
May God Bless America
