TERRORISM in INDIA

Kezia Dewi
India has been facing terrorism since independence. But, terror attacks of Mumbai augurs a grim new chapter in international terrorism at India. According to sources in Mumbai, armed groups and individuals have attacked at least ten (if not more) targets inside the city including the Taj Hotel, Oberoi Hotel, a railway Station, the Leopold Café and other locations. This terrorism action nearly killing at least 155 people and injuring 327.

Several terrorist group in India are coming from the whole of Muslim community in India. As we know, India has a little over 140 million Muslims. Although majority of Indian Muslims are loyal, law-abiding citizens, but terrorist groups always tries to bitter the relationship between two communities that is Hindu & Muslims. Another terrorist group coming from North East India (North-East India is racially, linguistically and culturally very distinct from the other states of India). While, the Maoist terrorist is active in Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Bihar right up till the Nepal border. At South India (Tamil Nadu state) there are also terrorist group from Tamil community (LTTE).

Of course, terrorists are a little minority in India, but they' re enough to make many damages to get what they want. Many facts show that terrorist wants to hit every state in India. No place is safe , even high security places like Parliament or religious places are also on their gun point. The causes behind terrorism here are religious and non religious. Political factors are responsible for insurgency-cum-terrorism in North East India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura state) and South India (Tamil Nadu state), while in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Bihar (Central India) the economic factors like absence of land reforms, rural unemployment etc are causing terrorism. Terrorism in Central India (Naxalism) trying to develop a "revolutionary opposition". The insurrection started on May 25, 1967 in Naxalbari village when a peasant was attacked by hired hands over a land dispute.

But the Mumbai terrorism attack due to religious causes. Terrorist are demanding the release of 'Mujahideens' held in Indian jails. The terrorist calling themselves as Deccan Mujahideen- which in fact members or trained by Lashkar e Toiba from Pakistan. Religious terrorist groups are mainly operating from neighboring countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh. After most acts of terrorism in India, many journalists and politicians accuse Pakistan's intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence of playing a role.

Fighting with terrorism should not only be the duty of Indian government. Role of civilians is also important. India also need a powerful international cooperation,a powerful security regime and finally a very strong and powerful legal regime to prevent India from terrorist attacks.
