The suspect was subdued and suffered burns as the result of his attempt, and two of the other over 270 passengers reported minor injuries. It seems that although we know this we don't as yet know what kind or how sophisticated this device was. One person was taken to the hospital.
President Obama was told about this today and is getting regular updates. The President talked with the White House's counter-terrorism advisor, John Brennan and Denis McDonough the National Security Council Acting Chief. We have been reassured that an increase in security on airlines will take place.
"The Department of Homeland Security said passengers might see additional screening measures on domestic and international flights because of the incident and urged travelers to report any suspicious activity or behavior to law enforcement officials. "We encourage those with future travel plans to stay in touch with their airline and to visit www.tsa.gov for updates," the department said. source
The plane, once all the passengers had gotten off, was moved to a safe area where the baggage was being screened again.
We are going to Israel and have been told not to bother actually packing neatly because everything will be gone through. Personally I would rather have the safety that El Al gives its passengers rather than the lack of safety I see whenever I get on a plane in the United States for a flight within the states.
Whether or not this Nigerian acted alone or had training from Al Queda or some other group isn't known.
You may remember Richard Reid. It happened eight years ago on a flight from Paris to Miami when he tried to ignite his shoe to blow up an American Airlines flight. He had packed explosives into his gym shoes so now we put our shoes through the x-ray machine. But what will it take to take precautions before near mishaps? Will it take another devastating act of terrorism?

Post a CommentHave a wonderful trip - I look forward to your "reports" from there!
Have a great and safe trip! El Al security is tighter than Lagos, though I didn't think that Amsterdam was slack (flew through there three months ago).
Awful that travel has come to this.
This is not only scary but a real insight to the lack of airport security.
Very frightening, it so scary that we have to live in a world like this when we never know when our lives may be threatened.
