Tessalon: Agent for Cough

Sue Ellen K.
If your doctor has prescribed you Tessalon, than you probably are already aware that Tessalon helps relieve the symptom of cough. Tessalon comes of the form of capsules. The capsules for Tessalon are yellow, and they come in the strenghs of one hundred milligrams, and two hundred milligrams. The generic name for Tessalon is Benzonatate. Tessalon is taken three times a day as needed in the one hundred milligram form. A patient can only take up to six hundred milligrams of Tessalon a day. When taking Tessalon, it's extremely important that the patient swallow the Tessalon capsules whole.

Chewing Tessalon and/or dissolving it in your mouth is not accepted at all. If you, as a patient, experience difficulty breathing or swallowing shortly after taking your Tessalon medication, conslut your doctor immediately. If your doctor prescribes Tessalon for your child, and your child is under ten years of age, question it because Tessalon is not indicated for children under ten years of age. Benzonatate is the primary ingredient in Tessalon. Benzonatate acts by anesthetizing the stretch receptors located in your respiratory passages, lungs, and pleura by slowing down their activity and therefore reducing the cough reflex from its source. Tessalon's effects occur in fifteen to twenty minutes, and the effects last for three to eight hours. If a child is taking Tessalon, the Benzonatate contained in the capsules may cause numbness in the mouth and throat. Tessalon has no known negative interactions with other drugs. If you're a patient using Tessalon, and you are allergic to anesthetic products of the para-aminobenzoic acid class (such as procaine and tetracained), extreme caution is to be excersized.

Cardiovascular collapse and bronchospasm, which are severe life-threatening reactions, have occured in the past from sucking, chewing, and/or dissolving Tessalon in your mouth. Caution: OVERDOSING ON TESSALON MAY RESULT IN DEATH. Never exceed the prescribed dosage. Like all drugs, Tessalon may cause adverse effects in your body. You may experience drowsiness, constipation, headache, pruritus (an itching sensation on your skin), nausea, a burning sensation in your eyes, and nasal congestion. You may also experience an overwhelming sense of serenity (calmness), a chilly feeling, visual hallucinations, and skin eruptions. When prescribed Tessalon, store in a dry, cool place away from children and sunlight. Also, do not store Tessalon in a damp place, such as the bathroom or basement. The dampness can diminish the effects of Tessalon by breaking it down. If you ever miss a dose of Tessalon, skip it and return to your normal dosing schedule. Never double dose. Remember to contact your doctor if you experience difficulty swallowing or breathing shortly after a dose. I repeat this because it is extremely important to always keep this in mind. If your cough does not improve after seven days, consult your doctor because there may be another underlying cause to your cough.
