PSAT, SAT and ACT
The first major tests that most people face are the PSAT, the SAT and the ACT. You will generally take the PSAT during your Sophomore or Junior year of high school and then take the SAT and ACT during your Junior or Senior year of high school. All of these tests take several hours to complete, and it is recommended that you spend several weeks, if not months, preparing to take these exams. There are dozens of books on the market to help you prepare for these exams, but hiring a PSAT, SAT or ACT tutor is a good way to focus your studying on skills that will help you during the exam.
Graduate School Entry Exams
If you plan on pursuing an advanced degree, or if you plan on attending medical or law school, then you will need to take and pass an entrance exam, like the LSAT or the GMAT. These exams test your reasoning skills and your basic understanding of key subjects related to the graduate school you will be attending. These exams are difficult and expensive. To improve your chances of passing these exams it is a good idea to work with a tutor who has experience with the exam you need to take.
Professional Exams
After spending the last six or seven years of your life in school training for your profession, your final step to becoming a doctor, lawyer or public accountant is to take the CPA exam, the BAR exam or the Medical Board Exam. These exams require months of focused studying and hundreds of hours of preparation. While you can do this on your own, it is advised that you either take a preparation class or that you work with a test preparation tutor.
The Cost of Test Preparation Tutors
Hiring a test preparation tutor costs money. If you are concerned about the price of hiring a tutor then you need to weigh the cost of a tutor against your other test preparation options. Your options include enrolling in a test preparation course, which can cost several hundred dollars, you can buy interactive test preparation software, which can cost anywhere between $50 and $500 or you can buy a test preparation book for under $100. When weighing your options, remember to factor in test passing guarantees offered or not offered by your test preparation option.
